US-131 closed overnight due to crash

Police say several people were taken to hospital after the crash, but none of the injuries are considered serious.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. A multi-vehicle crash closed northbound US-131 between 28th Street and Burton Avenue Thursday evening.

The accident, which occurred around 10:43 p.m., involved at least 15 vehicles and was caused by snow and ice on the roadway. Grand Rapids police told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that a fire truck was among the vehicles involved in the incident, although no firefighters were injured.

Emergency services responded quickly and the highway was closed at 11:08 p.m. Although several people were transported to area hospitals, initial reports suggest none of the injuries are considered serious.

Local road commissions are urging drivers to use extreme caution during current winter weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of reducing speed and maintaining an increased following distance.

The GRPD is continuing its investigation. Drivers are advised to check current road conditions and travel advisories before venturing out during winter storm warnings.

The highway was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and ensure road safety. MDOT says it reopened at 2:30 a.m.
