Vestas repurposes UK's Isle of Wight factory to manufacture land blades

Vestas repurposes UK's Isle of Wight factory to manufacture land blades

Press release: 11 December 2024 13:29 CET

Press release by Vestas Wind Systems A/SAarhus, 11 December 2024

Since 2002, the Vestas facility on the Isle of Wight has played a key role in manufacturing turbine blades for wind projects around the world. Currently, our factory focuses on manufacturing blades for the V174 marine turbine. Demand for this product is coming to an end and field constraints make it unsuitable for the next generation of marine blades.

However, following an agreement in principle with the UK government, Vestas plans to repurpose the factory to manufacture land blades primarily to support the UK market. Vestas is greatly appreciative of the work the current UK Government has done to make this change possible.

The conversion to onshore blades will help the facility meet the growing demand for onshore wind energy in the UK. This is increasing following the government's decision to lift the de facto ban on onshore wind in the UK and focus on building domestic supply chains.

The Isle of Wight's manufacturing operations currently employ approximately 600 people across manufacturing, logistics and support functions. The agreement in principle with the UK government to move to new activities will see approximately 300 jobs retained in manufacturing activities. Vestas will also offer many opportunities in other parts of its business. These opportunities include roles supporting UK operations and other Vestas factories.

The company's technical activities, which employ around 140 people on the island, will not be affected by this decision and it will remain the company's center of excellence for blade research, design and development.

“We have been investing in jobs and manufacturing activities on the Isle of Wight for over 20 years and take great pride in the technical expertise developed on site,” said Anders Nielsen, Group CTOO of Vestas. We are delighted that this partnership in principle with the UK Government will allow us to continue our manufacturing activities on the Isle of Wight to support onshore wind deployment in the UK. The new administration and the Secretary of State's commitment to domestic manufacturing and clean energy played a key role in making this decision. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who works for us on the Isle of Wight for their significant contribution to wind energy. We are pleased to maintain and provide many opportunities for our colleagues who have been impacted by this process.

Vestas will now enter a consultation process with employee representatives and aims to provide clarity to most employees by January 2025.

Following today's announcement, Vestas employs more than 33,000 people globally and more than 1,500 in the UK across its onshore and offshore activities.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
