Drones spotted above US Ramstein Air Base DW 13/12/2024

German authorities announced Friday that unidentified drones had been spotted flying over sensitive military and industrial sites.

Among the sites was the US air base at Ramstein in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

What do we know from the observations?

The sightings were first reported by German magazine Der Spiegel.

It cites a report from German security authorities according to which several drone sightings were recorded above the Ramstein base on December 3 and 4.

Der Spiegel reported that unidentified drones had also been seen above the facilities of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall.

Unidentified drones were also seen over the Brunsbttel region in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein in August.

According to media reports, authorities believed at the time that the drones were part of a Russian espionage campaign.

However, the ARD television channel reported on Friday that the investigation into the sightings in Brunsbttel had so far revealed no clues of espionage.

A U.S. Air Force spokesperson said its facilities at Ramstein Air Base were not affected.

There was “no impact to base residents, facilities or assets,” the spokesperson said.

“Together with host nation authorities, we continue to monitor the airspace to ensure the safety and security of the community.”

In recent weeks, unidentified drones have also been seen in New Jersey and other areas of the northeastern United States.

On Thursday, US federal authorities said in a report that there was no evidence that the sightings posed a threat to national security and that some of the aircraft were “lawfully operating piloted aircraft”.

In November, the US Air Force said unidentified drones had been spotted above three air bases in the UK.
