Plans to develop a sixth-generation British fighter jet to compete with the US have taken a step forward with a deal to create a new company made up of defense and aerospace companies from Britain, Italy and Japan.

BAE Systems, Italy's Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industry Enhancement Company (JAIEC), which each own a third of the as-yet-unnamed joint venture, are expected to be established by the middle of next year.

“The new business will bring together the significant strengths and expertise of our related companies to create an innovative organization that will lead the development of next-generation combat air systems,” said Charles Woodburn, BAE CEO. It is at an all-time high due to the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

The new company will be responsible for the design, development and delivery of the aircraft, which is scheduled to enter service in 2035.

The companies involved said the establishment of the joint venture was a pivotal moment for the international aerospace and defense industry.

Headquarters will be located in the UK, the first CEO will be from Italy, and operational and joint teams will be based in each partner country.

The plan follows the establishment of the 2022 Global Combat Aviation Program (GCAP), which will bring together the British, Italian and Japanese governments and arms manufacturers to develop aircraft with high long-term export potential.

BAE is currently building the Eurofighter Typhoon at its Lancashire plant in collaboration with France, Germany and Spain, and is making parts for the F-35, which is built by US defense giant Lockheed Martin.

The GCAP venture could also be expanded to include Saudi Arabia. The agreement with Britain and Japan will now be extended to Saudi Arabia, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said recently.
