More than 35,000 migrants have arrived in the UK across the English Channel in small boats so far this year, according to recent figures.

On Saturday, 160 people departed from France on three boats, taking the total number of passengers this year to 35,040, a 20% increase on last year.

The total number of small vessel passages in 2023 was 29,437, and the number of passages in 2024 exceeded 29,578 as of October 25 of this year.

Figures for the week ending Saturday show there were no small boat arrivals between Saturday 7 and Wednesday 11 December.

But on Thursday, 609 people made the crossing in nine small boats, making it the busiest day on record for December crossings.

On Friday, a further 298 people made the trip in five small boats.

The Home Office announced today that 13,460 migrants have been removed from Britain since Sir Keir Starmer's Labor party won a landslide election victory last July.

The Labor government said this meant more immigrants have been removed from the country since it was elected than in any other six-month period in the past five years.

Border Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle told Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips that Thursday's high figures were partly due to “pent-up demand” for “smuggling gangs” after five days without boats.

Asked what the government was doing to tackle smuggler gangs, Ms Angela said: “I'm not going to sit here and say that if something this well established and sophisticated is presented to me, I can do it.” If you take a magic wand and wave it, everything will be okay in 5 months.

“This is a difficult task. It will take time to do this. It will require good operational cooperation and good cross-border security.”

She declined to provide a date for when the government wants to reduce the numbers or how much it wants to reduce them.

The minister said the government had undertaken “a lot of international effort”, including launching advertisements showing how smuggling victims are treated in countries where many migrants arrive.

“If you are here illegally, I hope you leave,” she added.

“If you are here illegally and have no right to be here, please leave voluntarily. We may be able to help you leave voluntarily.

“If you stay here and don’t leave, we will eventually force you to leave.”
