Live snow map shows 566-mile polar blast expected to hit UK in coming days | weather | tidings

The weather map has turned blue and purple as heavy snow is expected to fall across England and Scotland next week.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected to fall in and around Newcastle and northern Scotland on Thursday 19 December.

White powder and showers will continue throughout the day as a 566-mile wall of winter weather pushes out of eastern Europe.

With the Arctic blast, wind chills are expected to reach -4C and WXCHARTS' maps will turn icy blue.

The blast, stretching from Wick in Scotland to Plymouth in Devon, will plunge most of the country into sub-zero freezes at 6pm on December 19.

Up to 3cm of snow will accumulate in Lancashire and Yorkshire this afternoon. Aberdeen and Inverness will also see white material accumulating on the ground, with 1cm expected at 9pm.

Most of southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland will remain dry on Thursday, with rain falling throughout the early morning and tapering off in the afternoon.

The Met Office, the weather forecaster for England and Wales, expects more sunshine and showers for the rest of the country on Thursday. Strong winds are expected across the country as cold temperatures sweep across the UK ahead of Christmas.

The wall of wintry weather will continue until the end of the month as showers move south-east during this period. The wettest and windiest weather will mostly stay in the north, with heavy rain at times expected as a low-pressure system moves through, according to the Met Office.

Further into southern England there is likely to be some unsettled weather at times, but the increased influence of high pressure will make it drier overall.

Snow will continue to fall in the higher elevations, but during cold weather, blizzards may temporarily cover lower elevations to the north.
