British diplomat meets rebel leader in Damascus

British diplomats held talks with the leader of the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad a week ago.

Images posted on social media by the group's Military Operations Department show HTS leader Ahmad al-Shara (formerly known as Mohammed al-Golani) meeting senior officials in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Among those pictured with him was Britain's Special Representative for Syria, Anne Snow.

HTS said the delegation discussed “latest developments” in the country.

Al-Sharaa also called on the West to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria under the Assad regime, including designating HTS a terrorist organization, in an interview with the Times newspaper.

“They must lift all restrictions imposed on caningers and victims. The caningers are now gone. This issue is non-negotiable,” he said.

The meeting with British diplomats on Monday came after Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the government had established “diplomatic contacts” with HTS, which Britain considers a terrorist organization.

Lammy said of his hopes for a new leader in Syria: “We want to see a representative government, an inclusive government. We want to make sure chemical weapons stockpiles are secured and not used, and we want to make sure the violence doesn’t continue.”

“For all these reasons, using all the channels available to us – diplomatic and, of course, intelligence-led channels – we seek to address HTS where necessary.”

The government announced a $50 million humanitarian aid package for vulnerable Syrians, including refugees, in the region.

The United Nations estimates that at least 374,000 Syrians have been displaced by the fighting that ousted Assad's regime, in addition to the millions already displaced by the civil war.
