Tom Cruise receives US Navy's highest civilian honor

Tom Cruise has been awarded the US Navy's highest civilian honor for his “outstanding contributions” to the military through his on-screen roles.

Cruise's starring role in the 1986 hit film Top Gun catapulted him to stardom, and the film's record-breaking success caused military enlistment numbers to soar.

The Distinguished Public Service Award was presented to Cruise at a ceremony on Tuesday at Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey.

The 62-year-old star expressed her gratitude for this “extraordinary recognition.”

“I admire all military men and women,” Cruise said, alongside U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who presented him with a certificate and medal.

“I know that something in life that is very true for me is that to lead is to serve. And I know that deep down. And I see it in military men and women.”

The Navy thanked the action hero, who it said “increased public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while wearing the uniform.”

Cruise starred as pilot Maverick in Top Gun, a film about Cold War flying aces, and he was so influential that the Navy even set up recruiting tables in movie theaters.

The Oscar-nominated star reprized his role as Lt. Pete Mitchell in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which the Navy said has “reinvigorated” military interest among young audiences.

On Tuesday, Del Toro said, “Tom Cruise spent nearly four decades as a steadfast supporter of the men, women and families of the Navy and Marine Corps.”

Cruise was also celebrated for his roles in the action films Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men and the Mission: Impossible series.

Cruise was in Chertsey, Surrey, while working on his upcoming film Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which is due for release in May 2025.

This prestigious civilian honor was previously awarded to Oscar winners Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks for their work in the World War II film Saving Private Ryan.
