Tom Cruise Receives US Navy Commendation for Strengthening the Military Through His On-Screen Roles

LONDON (AP) The world's most famous fictional Top Gun is now a decorated naval hero.

Tom Cruise received the U.S. Navy's highest civilian honor on Tuesday for his outstanding contributions to the Navy and Marine Corps with Top Gun and other films.

Cruise, who worked in the UK, received the Distinguished Public Service Award from US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro at a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London.

The 62-year-old actor said he was proud to receive this extraordinary recognition, accompanied by a medal and a certificate.

I admire all military men and women,” Cruise said. I know that something in life that is very true for me is that to lead is to serve. And I know it deep within me. And I see it in military men and women.

The Navy said Cruise brought awareness and appreciation to its highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while wearing the uniform.

Top Gun, the hit 1986 film about Cold War flying aces, made Cruise a star and led to a surge in military enlistment. The Navy even set up recruiting tables in theaters.

Interest was renewed with the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, in which Cruise's character mentored a new generation of elite aviators.

The Navy said the sequel brought nostalgia to older audiences and invigorated the minds of new audience members, thereby targeting younger audiences' interest in the skills and opportunities the Navy can offer.

Cruise has also been praised for his roles in Born on the 4th of July, A Few Good Men and the Mission: Impossible films.

Cruise's next on-screen adventure, Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, is scheduled for release in May 2025.
