UK announces $283 million military aid plan for Ukraine

British Defense Secretary John Healey announced a 225 million pound ($283 million) military aid package for Ukraine on December 19 after a visit to Kiev.

The package includes more than 92 million pounds ($115 million) of equipment to support the Ukrainian navy, including small boats and reconnaissance drones, according to media reports. A further 39 million pounds ($49 million) will be used to supply more than 1,000 counter-drone electronic warfare systems.

Munitions, spare parts and equipment are also included in the package.

The latest aid package comes after Healy paid a surprise visit to Kiev on December 18 to meet Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in a show of solidarity for the embattled nation.

“The brave people of Ukraine continue to defy all expectations with their indomitable spirit,” Healy said in a statement. “But they cannot do it alone.” The UK will therefore strengthen its international leadership over Ukraine throughout 2025.

The introduction of the anti-drone electronic warfare system comes as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urges Western allies to provide additional air defense systems as Russia continues its airstrikes against Ukrainian cities.

At a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Brussels on December 18, Zelensky called on NATO allies to provide more air defense. The president later announced in a press briefing with reporters that 19 air defense systems were needed to protect critical infrastructure across the country, according to a Kyiv Independent journalist who attended the briefing.

Britain's announcement on December 19 comes amid news that the United States may run out of time to provide the remaining $5.6 billion in military aid allocated to Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month.
