US temporarily bans drones in parts of New Jersey and New York
U.S. aviation authorities have banned the use of drones at 22 infrastructure sites in New Jersey and 29 others in New York state for 30 days after an increase in drone sightings in the east of the United States.
These measures authorize the government to use “deadly force” against unmanned aircraft if they pose an “imminent threat to security.”
Pilots operating in restricted areas risk interception and detention by law enforcement, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.
The move comes after weeks of mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey and other states, sparking concern among residents and sparking a number of online conspiracy theories about foreign involvement.
Officials haven't given many definitive answers, but President Joe Biden said there was “nothing nefarious” about the drone sightings.
The order, which initially covered sites in New Jersey, states that no unmanned aircraft can operate below 400 feet, the maximum altitude for recreational drone operations under FAA rules.
New Jersey's bans will expire on January 17, but the one targeting Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster will continue until January 31, after he is inaugurated as president.
Many of the restricted areas are located around infrastructure, such as electrical substations. Others cover areas such as ports and airspace around military installations or airports.
The FAA says a handful of agencies, such as law enforcement and disaster response missions, are not included in the restrictions.
Some commercial drone operations will be permitted under these restrictions, but operators will need a valid statement of work and an approved special government interest airspace exemption.
Hours after New Jersey's ban was announced, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said similar restrictions would be put in place in her state.
“I spoke with [Homeland Security] Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas on several occasions and has just been informed that he has coordinated with federal partners and that the FAA plans to grant temporary flight restrictions over certain critical infrastructure sites in New York,” she declared in a press release Thursday evening.
“This action is purely preventative; there is no threat to these sites.”
Hochul said no threats to public safety or national security had been detected, but that she would seek legislation from Congress to “give state and local law enforcement the authority and resources they need to manage this evolving technology.”
The FAA updated its order with the New York sites shortly thereafter. These bans were introduced a day later and will last until January 18.
For weeks, Americans have been reporting drones flying near U.S. military bases, near the coast and around U.S. infrastructure.
The Pentagon previously denied a New Jersey lawmaker's suggestion that the possible drones came specifically from an Iranian “mothership,” while an FBI official said there may have been “a slight backlash excessive” on the subject.
“We are monitoring this closely, but so far, no sense of danger,” President Biden said Wednesday.
Following a closed-door briefing by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, members of Congress attempted to reassure him.
The “vast majority” of sightings were of normal aircraft or legally operated drones, Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes said.
As the mystery persists, state governments are calling for more power to deal with small, unmanned planes spotted in the skies. Earlier this week, Hochul said authorities were sending him a drone detection system.
Among those who expressed suspicion was Trump, who said the government “knows what's going on” but “for some reason they don't want to comment.” However, he said he “can't imagine it's the enemy.”
