The Department of Defense announced today that approximately 2,000 U.S. troops are deployed to Syria, approximately 1,100 more than has been reported in the past. “We briefed [the media] regularly that there are about 900 American troops in Syria,” Pentagon press secretary Air Force Maj. Ryder clarified that the additional 1,100 troops are considered “temporary rotational forces” – often in theater for 30 to 90 days – that are deployed to meet the fluid mission requirements of the U.S. Central Command area of ​​responsibility.

Conversely, the other 900 personnel are considered “essential” assets and are on longer-term deployments that typically last about nine to 12 months.

Ryder explained that such fluctuations in troop numbers are often quite common and that the additional forces were in place well before the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime on Dec. 8.

Additionally, during today's press briefing, Ryder said the Department of Defense is prepared to continue its mission despite the possibility of a partial government shutdown starting Saturday.

“In the event of a funding shortfall and government shutdown, the Department of Defense will continue to fulfill its fundamental responsibility and mission to defend our nation and the American people,” Ryder said.

“Active-duty military personnel – including federal active-duty reserve component personnel – would continue to report for duty and carry out assigned missions around the world to defend our nation and protect our security interests national,” he continued.

Ryder said that because DOD is a planning organization, the department has conducted “cautious planning and preparations for a potential shutdown,” noting that senior Defense Department leaders have continually updated the emergency plans.

“[Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III] and DOD leadership is monitoring the situation closely and remains committed to doing everything possible to mitigate the significant impacts that a funding disruption and subsequent shutdown would have on the department,” Ryder said.

Although Ryder made it clear that active component personnel and reserve personnel currently on federal active duty would continue to report to work in the event of a shutdown, he emphasized the caveat that these servicemembers would not be paid until new funds are appropriated by Congress.

“Plus,” Ryder continued, “[federal government] civilian personnel – including military technicians – who are not necessary to carry out or support the accepted activities would be made redundant due to insufficient funds.

Ryder added that because a funding disruption could cause “serious disruption” to the Department of Defense, such a closure is always avoidable.

“DOD urges Congress to reach a bipartisan, bicameral agreement on FY 2025 appropriations and avoid a [continuing resolution] — or worse — a government shutdown,” Ryder said.
