Number of US troops in Syria doubled, Pentagon reveals

In a surprise announcement, the Defense Department revealed Thursday that U.S. officials have doubled the number of U.S. troops in Syria to support the fight against ISIS, an increase that predates the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime this month -this.

Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said during the Pentagon press briefing that the United States has about 2,000 troops deployed in Syria, even as the U.S. Army and U.S. Central Command said consistently that there were only 900 soldiers.

Ryder did not say when the number of U.S. troops increased. He said he learned Thursday that the figure had been significantly higher for some time.

I don't have a specific date to provide, Ryder said, referring to the timetable for the increase.

From what I understand, it's been a while, so clearly before the fall of the Assad regime, he said, adding: “At least months.”

Ryder said the increase was not a response to the recent fall of the Assad regime or the search for missing U.S. journalist Austin Tice, kidnapped in Syria in 2012. The additional U.S. troops also support the mission to defeat the Islamic State. known as ISIS, and prevent it from regrouping, Ryder said. But he declined to provide more details about what U.S. forces specifically do, saying only that they are primarily Army soldiers.

A defense official, who asked not to be named, said the number of U.S. forces in Syria could be significantly higher than the Pentagon has reported for several years. The official said the true number of U.S. forces in the country may have been intentionally concealed.

Ryder said a core of 900 troops in Syria were deployed longer term, typically for nine to 12 months. Another 1,100 men were temporarily assigned to Syria for approximately 30 to 90 days.

When asked repeatedly why he only announced this higher figure now, Ryder reiterated that he had only just become aware of it himself. Given the considerable interest in Syria, Ryder said he felt obliged to disclose the exact figure.
