House of Representatives passes funding proposal without Trump demanding debt ceiling increase | American politics

The US House of Representatives passed a funding proposal Friday evening, just hours before the US government shutdown, with a bill that abandoned Donald Trump's demand to raise the debt ceiling.

The bill, passed by a vote of 366 to 34, approves government funding for three months and will be sent to the Senate, where it is expected to pass.

The vote came after the president-elect and his billionaire ally, Elon Musk, scuttled a bipartisan deal at the last minute, sparking strife within the Republican Party.

The bill, currently moving through the Senate, temporarily funds federal operations at current levels and adds $100 billion in disaster aid and $10 billion in aid for farmers.

The collapse of the Republican Party in the final days of the year provided a taste of the chaos Trump is expected to bring when he returns to the White House on January 20. A shutdown would have forced thousands of U.S. civil servants to be furloughed and could have disrupted holiday travel. The last federal shutdown occurred in December 2018, during Trump's first term.

The original bipartisan bill had been negotiated by House Republicans and Democrats, but was attacked Wednesday by Musk, the world's richest man, who spent more than a quarter billion dollars to elect Trump. Musk warned that any lawmaker who supports this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in 2 years!

In response, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson introduced a second version of the bill, a slimmed-down budget proposal that included an entirely new demand from Trump: a suspension of the debt ceiling. Trump had calculated that suspending national debt limits while Biden was still in office would spare him a tough fight in his first months in the White House.

Democrats have decried the new bill, calling it a cover for a tax cut benefiting wealthy backers such as Musk while creating trillions of dollars in additional debt for the United States. Several Republicans also rebelled, outraged by the government's plan to lift borrowing limits.

The bill failed by a vote of 174 to 235, a humiliating setback for Trump.

This week's political drama has shown that Trump's grip on the Republican Party is not ironclad. The president-elect had furiously insisted that the package pass, including threatening to support opposition Republican candidates in primaries who opposed it.

Earlier Friday, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, launched a scathing attack on Republicans for their handling of the budget crisis. Republicans blew up the deal they made and they need to fix this, period, she told reporters. [Republicans need] stop playing politics with a government shutdown, and they do what their billionaire friends want is what we see, to the detriment of hardworking Americans.

Although Jean-Pierre did not name specific people, his comments appear to refer to Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Democrats this week mocked the tech billionaire's influence, referencing President Musk's interventions. In a speech Friday, Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, denounced interference from the world's richest man that no one voted for, saying it was Musk's fault if Congress had been plunged into pandemonium.

Musk repeatedly spread misinformation about the bipartisan proposal he helped kill, the AP found. He claimed the plan would have given lawmakers a 40 percent raise when the maximum increase possible through the proposal was actually 3.8 percent. Musk also shared a fake post claiming the proposal would have given $3 billion to a potential new NFL stadium in Washington DC; the bill contained a provision to transfer the Washington Commanders Stadium land from the U.S. government to the District of Columbia, but explicitly stated that there would be no associated federal funding.

Earlier Friday, Trump reiterated his call for suspending or even eliminating the federal borrowing limit, and insisted that any shutdown should take place on Joe Biden's watch rather than his own incoming administration .

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, said Friday evening that he was confident the final bill would pass the Senate. While this bill doesn't include everything Democrats fought for, it does include major victories for American families, emergency aid to communities hit by natural disasters, no debt caps, and he will keep the government open without draconian cuts, he said in a statement. statement.

Among the 38 Republicans who voted Thursday against the Trump-backed debt ceiling plan were several members of the conservative pro-Trump Freedom Caucus. The group included prominent conservatives like Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, Chip Roy and Scott Perry, who have always been strong Trump allies but who opposed lifting government borrowing limits.

Kat Cammack, a Republican lawmaker who voted against the bill, told reporters it wasn't an easy vote for constitutional conservatives.
