Nigel Farage proposes working with Peter Mandelson to secure a US-UK trade deal | trade policy

Nigel Farage has said he would be willing to help Peter Mandelson negotiate with the Trump administration after the senior Labor figure was confirmed as the new US ambassador to Westminster.

Lord Mandelson said he believed the British reform leader, a friend of Donald Trump, could act as a link between Britain and the Republican president-elect.

But Downing Street declined to comment on whether Keir Starmer wanted the political veteran to work with Farage, saying only that the prime minister had already begun building a relationship with Trump.

Farage has previously suggested he would use his relationship with Trump and his team to act as a bridge between them and Downing Street. He told the Telegraph he was willing to work with Labor people if it was in the national interest.

Farage has claimed he can help with talks on trade, tariffs, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism. He said: I know these people, and in terms of trade, defense, intelligence, America is the most important relationship in the world, forget Brussels.

He said free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations were likely to be sector-specific. I want to help even if it benefits the government because it is in the national interest. But they may be so divided that they don't want to accept my offer.

Mandelson will assume the role in early 2025. Mandelson's resume as a former EU trade commissioner and UK secretary of state for trade is seen as a strength amid concerns about what a second Trump presidency could mean for Britain. He promised to introduce wide-ranging tariffs.
