Weather threatens holiday travel as storms and dense fog batter parts of the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and South.
Severe weather continued to batter parts of the Pacific Northwest on Thursday, with forecasts calling for a resurgence of heavy rain in a handful of southern and Midwestern states. The wave of storms is expected to dampen travel plans after the Christmas holidays.
Oregon and Washington will likely see moderate to heavy rain and a few thunderstorms throughout the morning, bringing up to 3 inches of flooding distributed across the region and potentially flooding in areas where rain falls quickly, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service. Mountain snow, strong winds and dangerous waves were also expected.
Nearly 60,000 customers were without power in Washington and Oregon around 8 a.m. PT Thursday, according to outage tracking system FindEnergy.com.
This is the latest iteration in a series of atmospheric river-driven storms currently affecting the West Coast. The initial wave in the Northwest is expected to move inland by Thursday afternoon, meteorologists said, giving the region a short reprieve before another round of severe weather arrives Thursday evening in many of the same areas. The upcoming period is expected to bring an additional inch or two of precipitation by Friday morning.

High wind warnings were also issued for coastal areas of Oregon and Washington. Forecasters in Medford, Oregon, warned Thursday morning that “destructive winds would bring down trees and power lines.”
The National Weather Service in Seattle shared similar warnings Wednesday night, noting that wind gusts in the region could peak at around 60 mph for coastal areas and reach up to 55 mph around Puget Sound. Portland meteorologists reported a wind gust of 92 mph at Beacon Rock, Washington — which is about 35 miles east of Portland — in the early hours of Thursday morning, the weather service said .
Widespread Wind Advisories and Strong Wind Warnings are in effect this evening through Thursday morning. Gusts are expected to peak at around 60 MPH for the coast and Admiralty Inlet northward. Gusts of 45 to 55 MPH are expected for Puget Sound. Stronger localized wind gusts are possible. #wawx https://t.co/ZYVosC6Wwh pic.twitter.com/tgZLzRQoGw

The latest storms in the Pacific Northwest have brought a series of dangerous weather conditions along the West Coast this holiday week. Earlier, a major storm hit central California and left at least one person dead at Sunset State Beach, who became trapped Monday under debris that authorities say piled up on top of it at cause of a large wave, reported the Associated Press.

Dangerous storms also targeted the South, potentially threatening states like Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas with large hail, damaging winds, flash floods and tornadoes.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated the state's emergency response plan in anticipation of the weather Thursday afternoon.
“Texas is prepared to deploy all necessary resources to help local authorities respond to severe weather threats,” Abbott said in a statement. “As Texans and out-of-state visitors begin traveling after the Christmas holiday, it is crucial that everyone regularly monitors road conditions, develops an emergency plan, and heeds advice from state authorities and local.”
Earlier, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth issued various watches and warnings Thursday morning for flash flooding, dense fog, tornadoes and thunderstorms in different parts of the region, some of which remained in effect well into the aftermath. -noon.
“A new round of thunderstorms is expected today, some of which could be severe,” forecasters said in an advisory issued Thursday morning. The weather service said north and central Texas would likely be affected, but the strongest storms were expected to hit in the afternoon as the system moves toward East Texas.

Dense fog also hung over parts of the Midwest on Thursday. In Kansas City, forecasters predicted that fog and light rain would persist throughout the day, with areas of particularly low visibility – less than a quarter mile in some places – expected to persist in central and l eastern Kansas as well as central Missouri until morning. . Forecasts suggest the fog would clear, but only to some extent, in the afternoon.
Farther north in Illinois, the outlook was quite similar.
“Areas of dense fog will persist over portions of northern Illinois through this afternoon,” the National Weather Service in Chicago said in a mid-morning advisory Thursday. “Expect low visibilities and slow traffic on the roads until conditions improve.”
