France rescues 107 people crossing to Britain on Christmas Day | migration

French maritime authorities conducted 12 rescue operations along the northern coast of France on Christmas Day, rescuing 107 people trapped in small boats trying to cross to the UK.

The French Channel and North Sea Maritime Authority said 30 passengers were rescued from the boat near Dunkirk on Christmas morning, while the others on board wanted to continue their journey and were taken into British custody after arriving in British waters.

Another boat with engine damage was also found near Dunkirk this afternoon. Passengers called for help and all 51 people on board were rescued. The 26 people were later disembarked from another boat after encountering difficulties near Calais.

More than 450 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Christmas Day, according to the Home Office.

Figures updated on Thursday showed 451 people arrived in 11 boats. The last known arrival of a vessel carrying migrants was on December 14, when 160 people arrived in three boats.

Weather conditions on Christmas Day meant there was less wind and Channel waters were relatively calm, leading more people to attempt the dangerous crossing. Numerous departures were observed off France's northern coast during what authorities called a turbulent day. Charities have warned that deaths are likely over the Christmas period.

It has been seen departing from Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime for Leffrinckoucke near Dunkirk, with dinghies and dinghies continuing to push along the increasingly long coast of northern France.

The Maritime Governor's Office said in a statement that the channel was a particularly dangerous area, especially in mid-winter when boats could be unstable and overloaded.
