Britons are bracing for heavy snowfall and a sharp drop in temperatures on New Year's Eve, with temperatures expected to drop to -2C.

The Met Office's long-term forecast says the mild and stable weather of the past few days will change dramatically as the new year begins.

Snow will fall first in northern Scotland before moving further south around 6pm on Monday.

The snow is expected to increase as the evening progresses and may begin to move further south to other parts of the UK on Tuesday.

Scotland will also be hit by heavy rain and winds that will also be prevalent in northern and western England.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: There won't be much change for the rest of this week and indeed this weekend, but we may see a broader shift to cooler and wetter conditions as we head into the new year.
