Unstable Weather Affects New Year Transition

The transition period between 2024 and 2025 looks distinctly uneasy for some parts of England, the Met Office has said.

The high pressure system currently dominating the UK forecast has brought overcast weather, low clouds and fog to many parts of the UK, except for northwest Scotland where a front has brought rain.

Neil Armstrong is the Met Office's chief forecaster. He said: “Heavy rain will start to fall across parts of north-west Scotland from Sunday.” After a brief break, there will be further rain and strong winds across Scotland on Monday and Tuesday as another low pressure area approaches. This could result in heavy snowfall in the mountains and lower elevations.

Yellow NSSWS warnings for rain have already been issued for Monday and Tuesday, with more warnings likely to be issued as confidence increases. Due to the complex nature of the forecast, certainty about the path of the low pressure area and associated weather fronts is currently low, but confidence will increase in the future. Unsettled conditions and potentially damaging winds, rain and snow could affect parts of southern England from New Year's Day.

Tony Wisson is Deputy Chief Meteorologist. He added: Winter showers are likely to feature in the forecast later this week as a cold northerly airflow becomes established.
