Britain is bracing for a major snowstorm in just a few days' time, with new weather maps showing parts of the country will be blanketed in snow.

As Britons recover from Christmas festivities, many should prepare for snowy festivities, according to the latest forecast.

But although one part of the country is set to be covered in white, other areas look set to be missing entirely.

The Scottish Highlands are expected to be hit by freezing weather on Monday 30 December, according to the latest forecasts.

According to WXCharts, weather maps show that most parts of Scotland are likely to see at least some snow, with up to 2cm per hour possible in the Highlands.

Scotland's major cities including Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow will see significant temperature drops, with temperatures in Inverness expected to drop to -11C.

Elsewhere in the UK, snow is also likely to affect parts of northern England and Northern Ireland. Newcastle upon Tyne could see temperatures falling to -2C and accumulating, while Belfast could experience winter temperatures as low as -1C.

Accumulating snow may also occur on the west coast of Wales, Cornwall and the south coast on Thursday 2 January.

But maps show the Midlands region will see no snow, BirminghamLive reports.

Weather expert Jim Dale, founder and chief meteorologist at British Weather Services, weighed in on the chances of snow next week.

He said: There is a certain ebb and flow. Cold weather will continue in Scotland from the 30th, and in the rest of the UK from the 1st to 2nd.

“However, while this avalanche will affect parts of England and Wales, Scotland will be predominantly white.

“The caveat is that it's still a little bit far off until next year, so the jury is still out because things could change pretty quickly.

The Met Office reports that the week leading up to New Year's Day will bring cloudy and mild weather to most of the UK, with fog, mist and rain expected in England and Wales on Friday December 27.

However, colder and brighter weather is set to follow with some blustery showers as the rain clears from the south-east on Saturday 28 December.

Snow is expected to accumulate in northern areas on Sunday and Monday, adding to the feeling of winter as we approach the new year.

Early forecasts show heavy snowfall will sweep across the British Isles, affecting large parts of England, Scotland and Wales.

The Met Office advises to keep updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for potential disruption in areas where significant snowfall is expected.
