Twenty counties in England are expected to see snow on New Year's Day, according to the latest weather maps.

The Met Office has already issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across Scotland on December 30 and until New Year's Eve, threatening “significant disruption”.

However, weather maps produced on Friday (December 27) show snow moving across northern England soon. The map shows counties in Scotland, Northern Ireland and England as affected as of noon on January 1.

Scottish counties where dust may be seen are: Scottish Highlands, Moray, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perth & Kinross, Stirling, Argyll & Bute, North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, East Lothian, Scottish Borders, Glasgow Cities, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.

Meanwhile, in England, snow could also fall in parts of Cumbria and Northumberland, and in Northern Ireland it could snow in Londonderry and Antrim. However, this is only if WX Charts' maps are proven to be accurate to this extent.

Snow could last until January 2, and one of WX Charts' snow probability maps shows the greater risk the further north you are. At midnight on January 2 there is an 80% chance in northern Scotland, but the further south you go the less likely it is and in southern England the chance is only 15-20%.

The Met Office has already warned that snow could pose an additional risk to northern Scotland and the Highlands between midnight on Monday (December 30) and midnight on Tuesday (December 31).

The yellow weather warning says 50 to 70 mm of rain could fall in many areas over the next two days, with some areas seeing 100 to 140 mm of rain. These high totals are most likely to occur in western Scotland.
