After Christmas, millions of people travel across the UK. But anyone planning to travel by train during the remaining four days of 2024 could face disruption due to rail engineering work and strikes.

Most stations and lines have reopened after two days of closure, but Liverpool Street and London's Paddington stations, two of the busiest stations in the UK, remain closed.

On the West Coast Main Line, which connects London Euston with the West Midlands, north-west England, North Wales and southern Scotland, power is supplied between Watford Junction and Milton Keynes Central. Supply has been interrupted.

Trains may be canceled, changed or delayed by up to 40 minutes, according to National Rail. The chaos is expected to continue until 12 noon.

The route between Glasgow and Motherwell is currently closed due to repair work to overhead power lines, and Avanti West Coast has urged passengers not to travel north of Preston before 10am on Saturday.

All major routes to Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire will be closed until the morning of Thursday 2 January 2025. However, the Elizabeth line is operating again.

Travel times between Norwich, Ipswich and London typically double. Passengers from East Anglia can take a train to Witham in Essex and a bus to Billericay. From here you can take the train to Stratford, which has links to the London Underground, Overground and Elizabeth Line.

Passengers between London and Stansted Airport can take the Stansted Express train, which departs and arrives at Tottenham Hale.

Hubs in South Wales and the West of England will remain closed until Monday 30 December. Great Western Railway passengers from Cornwall, Devon, Swansea and Cardiff can catch hourly trains to and from London Euston.

They advertise direct flights between Euston and Taunton or Swindon, but in reality they stop at Reading where pick-up and drop-off drivers are not permitted.

Journey times will be extended by approximately 30 minutes and the number of trains running will be reduced.

The London St Pancras International northern line is closed just outside the station due to bridge replacement, with no trains to Luton, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham or Sheffield. It doesn't run. We will reopen on Monday, December 30th.

Thameslink trains to Luton (including the airport) and Bedford are also closed.

London Euston is once again taking the pressure off and passengers have been advised to take the Avanti West Coast or London Northwestern train to Milton Keynes Central and then catch a connecting bus to Bedford.

West Coast Main Line

Network Rail is carrying out cancellation and diversion work at Crewe, one of the UK's most important junctions.

Avanti West Coast strike

On New Year's Eve, train managers working at Avanti West Coast will begin a five-month series of strikes. RMT union members will also suspend work on January 2 and every Sunday from January 12 to May 25. A dispute arose over wages for holiday work. Train managers have been offered 250 on weekdays and 300 on weekends, but want more. Train drivers get paid 600 for working on their days off.

The significantly shortened Avanti West Coast timetable will come into effect on the first two strike days – December 31 and January 2 – with a reduced number of services running during restricted operating hours. The first train of the day leaves Euston at around 8am and the last train before 5pm.

North Wales, Blackpool and Edinburgh will not have Avanti West Coast services on strike days.

Tuesday, December 31st

Avanti West Coast operates one car per hour between Euston and Birmingham, Manchester and Preston, with a limited service to Glasgow. There is also a train every two hours between Liverpool and Crewe. Avanti West Coast trains do not serve Macclesfield.

Thursday, January 2nd

Intercity operators operate one train per hour between Euston and Wolverhampton (via Birmingham), Crewe and Manchester. There will also be limited services between Glasgow and Preston. Avanti West Coast services do not provide services to Warrington Bank Quay or Wigan North Western.
