The Met Office has issued a series of yellow weather warnings, with heavy snow and winds of up to 60mph expected to hit the UK in the new year.

Forecasters have issued warnings for snow, rain and wind alike, causing confusion as 2025 begins.

The Met Office said between 20 and 25 millimeters of snow could fall over the next few days, with the heaviest accumulations in the Scottish Highlands but widespread snowfall across the UK.

Major northern cities including Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Liverpool and Leeds could see snow accumulating as cold air moves across the northern half of England.

The first notification starts on December 30th and lasts until New Year's Eve.

As 2025 begins, a number of yellow alerts come into effect.

Meteorological Administration

The Met Office issued a total of nine yellow warnings between December 30 and January 2, leaving no part of the UK unaffected.

A snow warning has been issued starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday and lasting until the early hours of Thursday morning, forecasters said. Rain associated with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west will push east Wednesday.

This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across northern England. Widespread accumulations of snow of 2-5cm and locally close to 10cm are possible, with 10-15cm and locally up to 20-25cm possible over hillsides with significant drift due to strong winds.

Forecasters said travel disruptions were likely on air, road, rail and ferry services during this period.

Areas under a rain warning have been warned that flooding could inundate homes and businesses and cause damage to buildings.

Meanwhile, a gale warning is in place from 9am on Wednesday and will last across England and Wales for almost 24 hours.

The Met Office warned of very strong winds and said debris and large waves could cause injury and risk to life.

A deep low is expected to bring very strong winds across the UK from the west. Wind gusts of 65 to 75 mph are likely around the coast and hills, especially in the south and west, while 50 to 60 mph gusts are likely to be fairly widespread inland, forecasters said.

Forecasters said disruptions to air, road, rail and ferry services were likely during this period.

A life-threatening rain warning previously issued earlier this week has been upgraded to include a snow warning.

The yellow alert begins at midnight on 30 December and remains in effect until 11.59pm on 31 December, in time for the start of the Auld Lang Syne performance.

The warning applies to almost all of Scotland, excluding parts of Dumfries and Galloway in the south and the Orkney Islands in the north.

The Met Office said accumulating snow was possible, with an existing warning predicting up to 140mm of rain.

To the north and east of (and including) Perthshire, precipitation is likely to fall as snow, with accumulations of 10-20cm possible above 150-200m, particularly in higher elevations, and several centimeters at lower altitudes further away from the windward coast. . As warm air moves in, the snow changes back to rain, and as the snow melts quickly, flooding occurs in many places.

The final warning, a yellow wind warning that will last for 21 hours across England and Wales, ends at 6am on Thursday.
