The United States suffers its first defeat at the World Junior Hockey Championship

OTTAWA, Ontario – Tuomas Uronen scored 1:46 into overtime to give Finland a 4-3 victory over the United States on Sunday at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Uronen, who plays for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League, rushed down the right side and beat goalie Trey Augustine high on the glove side.

Augustine, a standout player for the Michigan State Spartans, was back in net Sunday after serving as a backup to Hampton Slukynsky in Team USA's 5-1 win over Latvia on Saturday. Augustine finished with 29 saves in the loss.

The Americans, defending champions, lost for the first time in three games. They will finish Group A play Tuesday night against Canada. Finland has won two in a row after an initial defeat against Canada.

“Everyone is going to be really frustrated in themselves and with the result today,” Team USA captain Ryan Leonard told NHL.com after the loss. “At the end of the day, we're playing for first place against Canada. It's not off the table yet, but we all have to be ready to go.”

Jesse Kiiskinen, Julius Miettinen and Arttu Alasiurua also scored for Finland, and Petteri Rimpinen made 41 saves, to the delight of the packed house. In fact, 16,433 fans attended the match, during which there were often chants of “Let's go, Finland!” »
