UK ministers warn housing crisis will put NHS and economic plans at risk | house

Ministers have been warned that efforts to save the NHS and grow the economy will fail if the housing crisis is not tackled as a damning report reveals millions of people are living in substandard homes that risk their health.

In the UK, 4.5 million people aged over 50 with pre-existing health conditions live in poor quality housing with one or more problems that can make them more ill due to increased dampness, decay or decay. The Center for Aging Better analysis found: Of these, 1.7 million are aged 70 or older.

Dr Carole Easton, CEO of the Center for Aging Better, a charity that addresses inequality in older people, said the report exposed how the housing crisis was putting millions of older people with health problems at risk.

This is obviously terrible, especially for people living in homes where the risk of contracting the disease is very high as winter approaches.

But this is very bad news for the country as well. Older workers living at home with worsening health conditions will be less able to work and less likely to contribute to economic growth.

Older people whose serious health conditions are exacerbated by their homes will need medical care, putting additional strain on our health system in the winter. All of this can be avoided if we tackle the problem of poor housing with the urgency and priority it demands.

The report looked at people over 50 years of age whose health conditions were affected by substandard living conditions, including respiratory diseases, congestive heart failure, heart disease, neurological diseases and lung diseases such as asthma.

Identified housing problems included increased moisture, water leaks, poor condensation, electrical or plumbing problems, rot and rot, being too cold in the winter, and structural issues.

The analysis also found significant inequalities. Almost half (46%) of black, Asian or minority ethnic people aged over 50 with one of the specified health conditions had at least one problem at home. This compares to one in three white people (32%).

People aged over 50 and from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds with health problems were twice as likely as white people to have five or more housing problems.

People aged over 50 who are negatively affected by poor living conditions and have a health condition that poses serious problems for their home are most likely to live in London (52%), the North East (35%) and the North East (35%). It was followed by West (35%).
