Fireworks may not be the only thing lighting up the sky as the clock strikes midnight, ringing in the new year.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Northern Lights, are expected to be visible in parts of North America starting Tuesday evening, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Two bursts of coronal mass ejections of magnetic field and plasma from the Sun's outer atmosphere are expected to reach Earth on Tuesday and create a strong geomagnetic storm across the Northern Hemisphere, potentially giving many Americans a stunning view as as they celebrate the new year.

“Aurora may become visible in many areas of the northern states and parts of the lower Midwest up to Oregon,” NOAA says.

The northern lights are usually visible in the northern polar regions, but as the current solar cycle has peaked and produced significant solar storms, the bright bands of color have been visible this year in parts of the United States that are not would not normally see them.

“The Sun has an eleven-year activity cycle, where the frequency of activity (solar flares, coronal mass ejections) increases and decreases. The year 2024 was the peak of our current solar cycle, marked by several storms solar energy that impacted Earth,” Lisa Upton, a senior scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, told NPR. Upton also serves as co-chair of the NOAA and NASA Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Committee.

In May, residents of states as far south as Alabama were treated to the celestial spectacle. In general, fall and spring are the best seasons to look for the Northern Lights in the United States, according to NOAA.

Now, if the coronal mass ejection, or CME, arrives Tuesday afternoon and is strong enough, the evening will be “promising for aurora development,” Shawn Dahl, a space weather forecaster at the Space Weather Prediction Center in New York, told NPR. NOAA.

Dahl says Tuesday evening and perhaps Wednesday evening are the best windows of opportunity to spot the aurora.

And since it is a new moon, its invisible phase when the side of the moon facing Earth is not illuminated, the chances of seeing the aurora in anticipated areas will be greater.

Still, seeing an aurora is a “game of chance” and skywatchers need to be patient, NASA says.

For the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights, go out at night away from city lights and look north, advises NOAA.

The best auroras can usually be seen between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., but they can also be seen in the morning and evening, the agency says.

The Northern Lights can be seen with the naked eye. To take a good photo of the aurora on your cell phone, use “night mode,” the agency says. You can also adjust the ISO and exposure settings or use an app that can help you with your camera settings.

Skygazers can track the timing and location of aurora on aurora forecast apps and the NOAA website.
