British teenage girls drink more than boys by the largest margin in Europe, study finds | alcohol
Research has found that teenage girls in the UK are drinking more alcohol than their male peers at higher rates than in other European countries.
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), more than a third of 15-year-old girls in the UK report getting drunk repeatedly, compared to less than a quarter of boys the same age.
In Denmark, Hungary and Italy, higher proportions of girls admitted to regular drinking than in the UK, but the proportions were much closer to those of boys. For example, in Denmark, 43% of girls admitted to being drunk repeatedly, compared to 46% of boys.
It's unclear why British girls regularly seem more vulnerable to alcohol than boys, but it may have something to do with marketing and trends among adults.
British women have the highest rate of binge drinking in the world. More than a quarter drink six or more alcoholic drinks at least once a month. British men are still much more likely to binge drink than women, with 45% drinking on a night out at least once a month.
Dr Anna Symonds, a clinical psychologist who works with young people, said she thought anxiety and depressed mood could have been factors in the findings. Research published last year found the UK had the lowest scores for life satisfaction among young people in Europe, with girls particularly affected.
According to Symonds, these happiness recessions can have an impact on teens' drinking habits. She said there is likely a link between drinking in that way and girls experiencing higher levels of anxiety and social anxiety.
She added: Perhaps they are using it to manage their emotions and psychological functioning at the loss of other strategies. When people are in a bad mood, they drink to help them feel better. Sure, alcohol is a depressant, but teens don't know that.
The study relied on participants being honest about whether they were intoxicated or not. British boys may still be binge drinkers, but surveys have shown them to have a higher tolerance for alcohol.
Professor Ian Gilmore, chairman of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, told the Times: The high rate of drinking among girls is a real cause for concern, especially considering the recent increase in alcohol-related liver disease seen among women. It's unclear what exactly is driving this trend, but changing cultural norms and astutely targeted marketing campaigns are likely to play a role.
The OECD says that although youth alcohol consumption is trending downward overall, it remains a problem. The latest data from 2022 shows that an average of 23% of 15-year-old boys across Europe reported recurrent drinking, down from 39% in 2002. For girls, the percentage decreased from 30% to 23%.
The OECD said: Recurring drinking, defined as getting drunk at least twice in a lifetime, remains common among adolescents in Europe. Early onset and repeated drinking among adolescents is a concern as it can have serious negative impacts on health and education. and social consequences.
Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, said the research highlighted the urgent need for change and better control of alcohol marketing.
Women in particular have been targeted by alcohol companies in recent years by urging them to drink more. This creates an environment that glorifies and normalizes alcohol, pretending it is essential to our daily lives, he said.
Moreover, we must follow the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer and support children to enjoy an alcohol-free childhood. This means putting in place appropriate controls, including reasonable limits on alcohol marketing, to ensure that children and young people are not continuously exposed to alcohol marketing, particularly online, on television and at sporting events.
