What kind of “stomach bug” is going around? Norovirus cases rise in US, CDC warns of symptoms

Norovirus cases appear to be increasing in various parts of the United States, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 90 norovirus outbreaks were reported during the week of Dec. 5, the most recent week for which data is available, according to the CDC.

CDC data from previous years for the same week in December shows a high of 65 reported outbreaks.

The CDC's national data reflects what has been reported in states and counties across the country.

In Minnesota, more than 40 outbreaks were reported in December, nearly double the usual number, according to the state Department of Health.

Earlier this month, an event celebrating Los Angeles' best restaurants left at least 80 people sick with norovirus, linked to raw oysters, the county Department of Public Health confirmed to ABC News.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis, which is inflammation of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract.

Although it is often called a “stomach virus” or “stomach flu,” norovirus illness is not related to the flu.

Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, causing 58% of foodborne illnesses each year, according to the CDC.

The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. However, patients may also experience fever, headache and body aches.

According to the federal health agency, the virus causes between 19 and 21 million illnesses, 109,000 hospitalizations and 900 deaths each year.

A person can become infected by having direct contact with an infected person and sharing food or utensils with them; touch surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus then touch your face or mouth; or consume contaminated food or liquids.

Typically, an infected person develops symptoms between 12 and 48 hours after being infected. However, norovirus usually goes away quickly and, in most healthy adults, lasts one to three days, according to the CDC.

There are no specific medications or antivirals for norovirus, meaning the only treatment available is to manage the symptoms.

The CDC recommends staying hydrated and drinking fluids that replenish electrolytes, which can be depleted by diarrhea and vomiting.

Although symptoms disappear within a few days for most people, certain groups are at high risk for severe dehydration, including those under 1 year of age, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised.

Health experts say the best way to prevent norovirus is to wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus.

The CDC recommends that people wash their hands after using the bathroom or changing diapers, as well as after eating, preparing or handling food.

To avoid food contamination, make sure fruits and vegetables are washed and shellfish are cooked to at least an internal temperature of 145 F.
