2 dead in high-speed head-on crash on US 2 in Snohomish

SNOHOMISH, Washington. Two drivers died and U.S. 2 was closed for hours in Snohomish after a fiery head-on collision Tuesday morning.

Crews from Snohomish County Fire District #4 (SCFD4), Everett Fire Department and Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue were dispatched to US 2, just east of east of State Route 9, at 6:43 a.m.

SCFD4 C Shift Battalion Chief Sean Witherow said there was a high-speed head-on collision.

Photos from the scene show the aftermath of the crash, which reduced the front of a vehicle to a mess of twisted metal. The collision appeared so violent that part of one vehicle appeared to be embedded in the ground.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Kelsey Harding said both drivers in the two-car incident were killed and there was no one else in their vehicles.

A WSP accident report says the driver of a Lexus, a 50-year-old Stanwood woman, was heading east when she crossed the center line and struck a Honda CRV heading east. west.

The driver of the Honda, also 50, was from Monroe.

Both women died instantly.

It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the wreck.

As a result of the crash, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) closed US 2 between State Route 9 and 88th St. SE. while soldiers investigated.
