The level of disturbance is recorded, which is read as 489.2 nT (nanotesla). This is a unit for measuring magnetic flux density and corresponds to one billionth of a Tesla.

Met Office maps show the Aurora can be seen at 6pm tonight and 3am tomorrow (Thursday, January 2), with the strongest viewing opportunity around 9pm, reports MyLondon.

But those trying to spot it should be aware that many areas elsewhere are covered in clouds, which can make spotting the light difficult.

“A coronal mass ejection arrived on Earth yesterday (New Year's Eve, December 31) and a second, weaker CME is expected to arrive today (January 1),” the Met Office said in the space section of its expert forecast.

“The combination of CME arrivals will slightly strengthen geomagnetic conditions today and possibly early tomorrow (Thursday, January 2), with the potential for visible auroras across northern Scotland, possibly southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, depending on the clouds.

“The geomagnetic activity is then expected to gradually decline to background levels.”

Naturally, aurora belts occur around Norway, Iceland, and Greenland.

This means it would take an unusual geomagnetic storm to bring the light just south of the UK.

The best way to see the Aurora in the UK during a storm is on a clear, cloudless night.

The light is best observed when looking toward the northern horizon from a dark location without light pollution.

Some astronomers say it is easier to find light through a camera lens than to see it with the naked eye.
