Much of the United States is bracing for a severe winter storm and intense cold

A blast of arctic air will lower temperatures across the eastern United States this week and frigid conditions could persist longer and expose millions of people to a prolonged and dangerous winter.

We're going to be stuck in a cooler pattern, said Zachary Yack, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Chicago. This will definitely take place in the middle and early part of next week.

The outbreak in the Arctic has already caused temperatures in the Northern Plains states to plummet. Forecasters predicted the high temperature in Minneapolis would be 20 degrees on Thursday and drop to 12 degrees on Saturday.

In Chicago, high temperatures are expected to hover around 20 degrees next week. Forecasters in both cities expect nighttime temperatures to drop into the single digits.

Yack said a low pressure system was moving south and pulling arctic air from northern Canada behind it.

Distortions in the jet stream pattern of strong winds in the upper atmosphere will allow cold air to stagnate and linger over much of the eastern United States.

The jet stream will be centered over the central and southern United States. There's nothing that can turn him back, Yack said.

Temperatures are expected to remain well below average even in January.

The system will not be limited to the Midwest and Plains states.

The coldest air of the season so far and dangerous wind chills are likely in many parts of the Southeast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center wrote in a long-range forecast. Subzero temperatures are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of the Florida peninsula. Impacts on very sensitive citrus crops are possible.

Snow is possible across the Southern Plains and Southeast, with potential for heavy snow in the Appalachian Mountains, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes and interior Northeast.

Climate Prediction Centers are forecasting below-average temperatures eight to 14 days in advance across most of the eastern United States, indicating the system could continue to persist beyond next week.

Yack said he is concerned about people in Chicago who work outside the home and vulnerable populations, like those experiencing homelessness.

“You could have wind chills below zero. That could lead to frostbite in a short period of time,” he said.
