Ice warnings have been issued across the UK as temperatures plummet after major flooding was declared. The Met Office's yellow warning, indicating potential travel difficulties, covers Scotland, Northern Ireland and North Wales, reaching the Midlands until 10am on Thursday.
A further snow and ice warning is in place for northern Scotland until 10am, where rain could change to snow, causing travel disruption and hazardous driving conditions, according to the Met Office. People planning to travel despite the cold weather were urged by the Met Office and National Rail to make advance preparations for their trip on Thursday.
Motorists should expect difficult conditions, especially in areas under a yellow weather warning, and are advised to allow additional time for potential delays or detours. Public transportation users are advised to check timetables and services before departing as delays or cancellations may occur due to inclement weather.
According to National Rail, the severe weather will affect trains across the UK, affecting northern services, TransPennine Express services, Transport for Wales services and ScotRail services. Two new flood warnings were issued just before 6am on Thursday as river levels peaked in both the Lower River Wharfe system in Yorkshire and the Lower River Ure waterway in North Yorkshire.
Britain is bracing for potential flooding as water levels in the Wharfe and Ure river systems, including their surrounding tributaries, peak. Areas most at risk within the Lower River Ure system include low lying land and local roads around Masham, Boroughbridge, Aldborough and Bishop Monkton.

Meanwhile, the area from Otley to the upper Ulleskelf, including Tadcaster, is at risk within the Lower River Wharfe system. Despite no further significant rain expected on Thursday, Britons are advised to avoid using low-lying footpaths or bridges near local watercourses and not attempt to cross flood water.
The warning comes after widespread flooding in Greater Manchester on Wednesday saw homes evacuated and train lines and roads closed. Mountain rescue teams supported Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in recovering property damage and stranded vehicles.
Areas still being monitored include Didsbury, Stockport, Trafford and Wigan. Around 450 people were evacuated from a Didsbury hotel on Wednesday evening, while 400 homes remain at low risk with no mass evacuation required.
Residents have been forced to evacuate a block of flats in Meadow Mill, Stockport, due to bad weather. The North West and Wales experienced heavy rain on Wednesday, with Marsden recording 101.2mm of rainfall, surpassing West Yorkshire's January average of 85.1mm.
Capel Curig in Wales also recorded 101.2mm, less than a third of the monthly average of 327mm. Train services across north-west England were disrupted by flooding, including Northern services, TransPennine Express services, Transport for Wales services and South West Rail services.
National Highways reported that the Woodhead Pass section of the A628 between Woolley Bridge and Flouch was closed due to flooding, as was the westbound section of the M56 between Junction 6 at Manchester Airport and Junction 8 at Bowdon. In Bristol, Bristol City Council and homelessness charity St Mungo's have activated severe weather emergency protocols until January 8 to increase volunteer shifts and provide more accommodation to ensure no one has to sleep on the streets during these extreme weather conditions.
Temperatures were expected to drop on Wednesday evening, reaching -7C or -8C in Scotland overnight. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast that Thursday's maximum temperature will be in the low to mid range.
Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, issued a stark warning to UK road users: “Most roads will be treated, and ice is still likely to be a problem on untreated roads.”
He also warned: “Further snow and ice warnings will be in place on Friday.”
Amid the dire forecast, an amber warning for snow has been issued for three days for almost all of England and Wales, along with parts of Scotland. The Met Office has warned rural areas are at risk of being stranded by impending winter weather this weekend.
School closures are expected to increase, as is the likelihood of power outages, not to mention the potential disruption of road, rail and air travel. The yellow warning, which runs from midday Saturday until 9am Monday, covers most of Wales except south-west England and skims across southern Scotland.
Forecasts suggest around 5cm of snow could accumulate in the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with up to 20 to 30cm possible in the highlands of Wales and the Pennines.
It may seem deceptively calm to those hoping for a mild Thursday, but temperatures are set to feel significantly chillier than they actually are, the Met Office advises. This frosty period is expected to continue until Friday, with ice forming overnight and possibly extending into south-west England by the end of the week.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “We've currently issued a very significant snowfall warning for Saturday through Monday, but that doesn't mean it could snow everywhere within the warning. There could be some minor impacts.”
