Top secret research institute develops atomic clock using quantum technology
New advanced atomic clocks allow soldiers to conduct safer and more accurate operations using groundbreaking quantum technology.
Quantum clocks developed at the top-secret Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) would be a huge leap forward in improving intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities by reducing reliance on GPS technology, which can be jammed and blocked by enemies.
The clock's precision is so exquisite that it lasts less than a second over billions of years, allowing scientists to measure time on an unprecedented scale. The device is the first of its kind to be manufactured in the UK and is expected to be deployed in military operations within the next five years.
The applications of quantum clocks extend beyond precise time measurement. Further improvements in GPS accuracy could transform global navigation systems, supporting everything from satellite communications to aircraft navigation.
The development of this cutting-edge technology supports a key component of the UK Government's transformation plan, supporting skilled and productive jobs that drive economic growth while protecting national security.
Additionally, further research will reduce the size of the technology to enable mass manufacturing and miniaturization, opening up a wide range of applications, such as use in military vehicles and aircraft.
Enhanced clocks like this atomic device will allow the Department of Defense to further support current and future capabilities. For example, a quantum clock can:
Enabling more accurate and independent navigation systems, reducing reliance on GPS satellites, which are vulnerable to jamming or destruction in conflict situations.
Secure communication systems, such as encrypted military networks, that rely on highly synchronized timekeeping.
Improves the accuracy of advanced weapon systems, such as guided missiles, that rely on precise timing to calculate trajectories and coordinate attacks.
Give our troops the edge over their adversaries in timing-critical operations, especially in areas like cyber warfare where milliseconds can make a difference.
Minister for Defense Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle MP said:
Integrating cutting-edge technologies into existing capabilities demonstrates the Government's commitment to innovation in the defense sector and ensuring our forces are best equipped to keep us safe at home and abroad.
Testing these new, groundbreaking technologies will not only strengthen our operational capabilities, but can also spur industrial development, strengthen the scientific sector and support high-skilled jobs.
This trial marks the first time that Dstl's UK-made optical atomic clocks have been tested outside the laboratory, providing new capabilities beyond existing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). GNSS vulnerabilities are a known national security risk, and atomic clock technology has the potential to provide reliable sovereign control to maintain accurate time for critical operations.
Paul Hollinshead, CEO of Dstls, said:
The first trial of an advanced atomic clock represents a significant achievement in the UK's quantum technology capabilities.
Not only will the data collected shape future defense efforts, but it also signals to industry and academia that we are serious about exploring quantum technologies for secure and resilient operational benefits.
The trial involved key partners including Infleqtion (UK), Aquark Technologies, HCD Research and Imperial College London, as well as in-house technology developed at the Dstls Quantum Laboratory. These prototype frequency standards were tested in collaboration with the Office of the Royal Navy's Chief Technology Officer and the Army Futures Team at BattleLab.
Commander Matt Steele, Head of Future Technologies, Royal Navy’s Chief Technology Officer, said:
The Navy has been investigating quantum technology for many years, and it is exciting to see that the challenges of physics and engineering in this field are now reaching the peak of being no longer just a scientific concept, but a reality.
In the coming years, the ability to effectively operate, survive, navigate, and remain lethal using Quantum in conjunction with GPS will secure operational advantages.
The Advanced Timing Apparatus (DATA) demonstration is part of a planned series of experiments designed to understand the performance and limitations of quantum clocks and their potential benefits for military and national infrastructure resilience.
Through DSTL, the Department of Defense has invested more than $28 million to shape UK research and development to achieve an early adopter advantage of this groundbreaking technology and keep defense and security needs at the forefront of UK efforts.
Jonathan, technology lead at industry partner Infleqtion, said:
Quantum is very important to the UK, particularly from a defense perspective. Looking at what's happening in the world today, it's becoming increasingly clear that there is a need for better, more robust location and timing services, which quantum is uniquely positioned to provide.

What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier. For additional info, money-saving tips, and free car insurance quotes, visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/ Compare-autoinsurance.Org is an online provider of life, home, health, and auto insurance quotes. This website is unique because it does not simply stick to one kind of insurance provider, but brings the clients the best deals from many different online insurance carriers. In this way, clients have access to offers from multiple carriers all in one place: this website. On this site, customers have access to quotes for insurance plans from various agencies, such as local or nationwide agencies, brand names insurance companies, etc. "Online quotes can easily help drivers obtain better car insurance deals. All they have to do is to complete an online form with accurate and real info, then compare prices", said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.
