Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have filed competing lawsuits that escalate the battle over allegations about what happened on the set of their movie, It Ends With Us.

Lively filed a lawsuit in New York on Tuesday against the actor and his publicity team, alleging sexual harassment on the set of the film and a scheme to “destroy” her reputation.

She is seeking compensatory damages, including “lost wages” and money for “mental pain and anguish.” It does not specify a monetary amount.

In his own lawsuit against the New York Times, first reported by Variety, Baldoni alleges defamation and fraud. He accuses journalists of working with the actress to “damage” her reputation and of not giving his team the time needed to react to an “explosive story.”

Baldoni's lawsuit alleges that the Times relied on “cherry-picked” and edited communications “devoid of necessary context and deliberately assembled to mislead.”

In a statement, the New York Times told BBC News that its report was “based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and emails that we cite accurately and in detail in the article “.

Baldoni was fired by his talent agency after the claims were published in the newspaper. His lawsuit seeks a jury trial and damages of $250 million ($199 million).

The actor's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, told CBS News that the newspaper “aided and abetted” a “smear campaign intended to revitalize Lively's troubled public image.”

Baldoni's lawsuit includes many of the same text messages and communications listed by Lively, which she used to accuse her team of orchestrating a social media campaign to shift public opinion against her.

In her own lawsuit, Lively accuses Baldoni and his team of damaging her public image following a meeting to address “repeated sexual harassment and other disturbing behavior.”

At the meeting, she reportedly presented 30 demands related to allegations of misconduct to ensure they could continue producing the film, including not depicting genitalia on set and not adding intimate scenes to the film. beyond those that Lively had previously approved.

Lively's legal team further accused Baldoni and his Wayfarer film studio of carrying out a “multi-layered plan” to destroy her reputation, which included manipulating social media and using friendly journalists to advance certain stories.

Baldoni's lawyers previously told the BBC that Lively's allegations were “categorically false” and said they hired a crisis manager because Lively threatened to derail the film if her demands were not met.

It Ends With Us was released last summer and sees Lively playing a woman in a relationship with a charming but abusive boyfriend, played by Baldoni.
