Extremely cold weather warnings have been issued for much of England as temperatures plummet after major flooding was declared. The Met Office's yellow warning indicates Scotland, Northern Ireland, North Wales and the Midlands could face difficult travel conditions until 10am on Thursday.

There is also a snow and ice warning in place for northern Scotland until 10am, with rain likely to change to snow, disrupting travel and creating hazardous driving conditions. It follows a major incident announced in Greater Manchester on Wednesday, with heavy rain forcing people to evacuate their homes and train routes and roads being closed.

Mountain rescue teams were called in to assist Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in dealing with damaged properties and stranded vehicles. Greater Manchester Police said Didsbury, Stockport, Trafford and Wigan remained under surveillance.

Around 450 people were evacuated from a Didsbury hotel on Wednesday evening, with 400 households deemed low risk and no widespread evacuation required. Residents were also evacuated from a block of flats in Meadow Mill, Stockport.

The UK was hit by heavy rain this Wednesday, leaving parts of the North West and Wales under water. Marsden in West Yorkshire received 101.2mm of rain, exceeding the average for January, while Capel Curig in Wales also received 101.2mm of rain.

Major flooding has caused major damage to a range of train services across the North West, with Northern, TransPennine Express, Transport for Wales and South Western Railway lines blocked. Highways were also unaffected, with National Highways reporting that the A628 Woodhead Pass and the M56 westbound would be closed due to flooding concerns.

Meanwhile, in Bristol, authorities are in full swing. Enacted severe weather emergency protocols will strengthen accommodations for the homeless until January 8 to ensure no one has to endure the cold on the streets. With temperatures expected to plummet overnight, reaching -7C or -8C in Scotland, the risk of ice poses a serious threat to travellers.

Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service, warns: “Most roads will be treated, but ice is still likely to be a problem on untreated roads.” Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan issued a stark warning: “Further snow and ice warnings will be in place on Friday.”

A three-day yellow warning for a blanket of snow has been issued for almost all of England and Wales, along with parts of Scotland, as experts warn rural areas could become isolated. Schools could close, there is a risk of power outages, road closures and travel disruption affecting flights and trains.

A yellow warning for snow is in place from midday Saturday until 9am Monday and applies to most of Wales and southern Scotland, except for south-west England. Forecasts show generally around 5cm of snow is expected to fall across the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with up to 20-30cm possible in the Welsh Mountains and Pennines.

“We currently have a very heavy snowfall warning in place for Saturday through Monday, but that doesn’t mean it could snow everywhere within the warning, we’re just giving you a heads up that there may be some impacts,” Morgan added.
