Britain's Department of Health and Security says older people are particularly at risk as temperatures drop to minus 8 degrees Celsius, ITV News' Kelly Foran reports.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice affecting most of England for five days, with some rural communities at risk of service disruptions.

Forecasters said schools could potentially close, power outages and road closures are likely, as well as delays and cancellations of flights and trains.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) has also issued a cold weather health warning across the UK ahead of a week of low temperatures, warning that deaths are likely to rise.

Where is it expected to snow?

A yellow weather warning for snow is in place for northern Scotland and the Shetland Islands from 4pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that 3 to 7 cm of snow is likely to fall in various places, and more than 10 cm of snow is expected to fall above 300 m. Across Shetland, most of this could fall during a brief period in the late afternoon.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from noon on Saturday until just before midnight on Sunday. This includes all parts of England except the south-west, most of Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

Around 5cm of snow is expected to fall across the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with up to 20-30cm possible in the highlands of Wales and 30-40cm in parts of the Pennines, which could lead to power outages. It could happen, the forecaster added.

Another yellow snow warning covering most of Scotland will remain in place throughout Sunday until noon on Monday.

Anyone planning a trip is warned of road delays, the possibility of vehicles and passengers being stranded, and delays or cancellations of rail and air travel.

Britons warned to stop travel

This is because major flooding accidents were declared in some parts of the country, and weather warnings for ice were issued ahead of heavy snowfall over the weekend.

A yellow Met Office warning indicates an icy crust is possible in northern and western Scotland, north-west England and Northern Ireland. The forecast, which will be in effect from 5pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday, warned travel conditions could be difficult. Scattered winter showers continued across western Scotland and Northern Ireland on Thursday night. As temperatures drop below freezing, there is a risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces, forecasters said.

UK Health and Safety Executive issues yellow warning for low temperatures

UKHSA has issued a yellow cold weather warning across the UK from 12pm on Thursday until January 8.

The Met Office said the cold weather appears to have led to an increase in deaths, especially among people over 65 and those with existing health problems. Some people will find it difficult to maintain indoor temperatures at the recommended 18C, which may pose greater risk to vulnerable people.

With a cold snap imminent, the government's decision to limit winter fuel benefits to only the poorest pensioners will bring “dramatic relief”, Age UK director Caroline Abrahams said.

She said the charity had already been contacted by older people “worrying about what they will do when this moment comes”.

“We urge older people to do everything they can to stay warm, even if it means risking having to spend more on heating bills than they think they can afford,” she said.

“Energy companies have a duty to help you if you are struggling and your local council may also provide support. It is better than putting your health at risk.”

For those planning to travel despite the current winter weather, the Met Office and National Railway have issued warnings reminding Britons to plan ahead if they travel in the coming days.

As the week progresses, overnight ice threatens to extend south into south-west England.

Difficult driving conditions are expected, especially in areas where a yellow weather warning has been issued. It is also advisable to allow additional time as circumstances may arise that may result in delays, diversions or disruptions to road users.

Passengers using public transportation are advised to check timetables and services before departure in case of delays or cancellations due to inclement weather.

flood warning

Two new flood warnings were issued just before 6am on Thursday, with river levels peaking in the Lower River Wharfe system in Yorkshire and the Lower River Ure waterway in North Yorkshire.

High water levels mean the Wharfe and Ure river systems and surrounding tributaries are at risk of flooding.

Areas most at risk within the Lower River Ure system include low lying land, including agricultural land and local roads in areas around Masham, Boroughbridge, Aldborough and Bishop Monkton.

On the Lower River Wharfe, there are areas at risk of flooding from Otley upstream to Ulleskelf, including Tadcaster.

No further significant rain is expected to fall in the area on Thursday and water levels are expected to start falling in the coming hours.

Britons in the area are advised not to use low-lying footpaths or bridges near local watercourses and not to attempt to walk, drive or cycle through floodwaters, with officials advising them to forget about it once the area is flooded.

The major incident in Manchester has been halted.

This comes as major incidents follow flooding that saw nearly 1,000 people evacuated. Firefighters across Greater Manchester attended more than 100 incidents due to flooding caused by heavy rain between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. In nearby Cheshire, the Bridgewater Canal breached its banks as rainfall damaged the waterway. In a joint update on Thursday, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service gave a joint update on Thursday. (GMFRS), Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) said there were no reports of injuries and they were currently focusing on recovery efforts. Mountain rescue teams declared a major accident occurred at 4 a.m. on New Year's Day. Fire Chief Dave Russel said: “Flooding on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day has caused significant damage and disruption across Greater Manchester. We have evacuated almost 1,000 people in the last 36 hours. Firefighters are working tirelessly alongside Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service, Mountain Rescue, local councils and a range of partners to keep people safe. “I would like to thank everyone involved in the response for their hard work and dedication.”

A number of train routes were disrupted or blocked due to flooding on Wednesday, mainly in north-west England, with some northern services, TransPennine Express services, Transport for Wales services and South West Rail services affected.

National Highways said the Woodhead Pass section of the A628 between Woolley Bridge and Flouch was closed due to flooding, as was the westbound section of the M56 between Junction 6 at Manchester Airport and Junction 8 at Bowdon.

In Bristol, severe weather emergency protocols have been activated by Bristol City Council and homelessness charity St Mungos. This protocol is scheduled to operate until January 8. This will increase volunteer shifts and provide more accommodation to ensure no one sleeps at night. distance during these extreme weather conditions.
