UK weather: Warning of snow and rain for most of the country this weekend | uk news

Warnings of heavy snow and freezing rain have been issued over the weekend, with freezing temperatures expected to wreak havoc across much of the UK.

The Met Office has issued two yellow alerts and two yellow warnings for most parts of the country for both Saturday and Sunday.

Forecasters said power outages were likely and vehicles could be stranded on the roads if the winter weather continues. Trains and flights may also be delayed or cancelled.

The Met Office said up to 30cm of snow was expected to fall in some areas, making it “highly likely” rural communities would be locked down. “Significant accumulations” of snow are possible in parts of the Midlands and North.

Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly said that while downpours – rain that immediately freezes on the cold surface of the ground – were a risk in the area, they were even more dangerous in Wales and could lead to “dangerous conditions in places”.

Police are considering freezing weather earlier this week as a factor in the death of a seven-month-old baby in a crash in Lincolnshire on Thursday night.

Where are the Met Office yellow warnings?

From 6pm on Saturday until noon on Sunday, an amber warning for snow and freezing rain is in place for most of Wales and central England, including the Midlands in the North West, Liverpool and Manchester. From 9pm Saturday until midnight Sunday, a second warning for snow covers most of the area. Northern England, including Leeds, Sheffield and the Lake District

Snowfall amounts are expected to range between 3 and 7 centimeters in both regions, with snow possibly mixing with rain at times in low-lying areas, forecasters said.

A less severe yellow alert also applies to most of England, Wales, Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland and will remain in place for various periods throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, a cold weather health warning issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also remains in place across the UK ahead of a week of cold temperatures.

The yellow alert will remain in place until January 8, meaning deaths are likely to rise, the agency said.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the National Meteorological Administration, said the low temperatures “could have serious impacts on the health of some people, including those aged over 65 and those with pre-existing health problems.”

He urged people to “check on your most vulnerable friends, family and neighbors” who may be at higher risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

Several snow and ice warnings have also been issued across Ireland. Met Eireann forecasters said Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary would see significant snow accumulation for 24 hours from 5pm on Saturday, making travel conditions difficult and visibility poor.

Anyone planning to travel on the weekend is advised to check their vehicles on state highways, keep their distance from roads and prepare a “snow kit” consisting of a blanket, food, water and a shovel.

Network Rail said it has a specially equipped winter fleet to keep railways running throughout the winter, while UK airports are also bracing for the cold spell.

Some football matches have been canceled, including Cheltenham's game against League Two leaders Walsall this weekend, Halifax's National League home game against Fylde and Friday night's Scottish Championship match between Airdrie and leaders Falkirk.

Saturday's race meeting in Newcastle was also canceled due to the course being frozen.

Simon Francis, charity chief executive of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, advised anyone struggling with energy bills during cold weather to first contact their energy supplier.

“They all need to have a plan in place to help those people, especially those who are vulnerable,” he told Sky News.

“It's not enough. We know it's not enough, but there's a possible plan. If you feel like your home is getting cold and wet and you can't afford to heat it, you should definitely tell them.”

The Meteorological Administration said cold weather will briefly cover parts of the south over the weekend and then resume next week.

Deputy Chief Dan Holley said temperatures will remain below average.
