Honduras suggests ending US military cooperation amid Trump's threat of mass expulsion

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) Honduras President Xiomara Castro's comments earlier this week threatening to end her country's cooperation with the U.S. military if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his promises of mass expulsions , generated political tension in his country, even though the US government did so. remained silent.

His threat to impose tariffs on Mexico if it did not do more to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking was met with a suggestion of tariff retaliation from that government. More recently, Trump criticized accusations related to transit through the Panama Canal and suggested that the United States could take it back, which the president of Panama flatly rejected.

The main US military presence in Honduras is at Soto Cano Air Base, outside the capital. Although it is a Honduran base, the United States has maintained a significant presence there since 1983, and it has become a key departure point for U.S. humanitarian and counter-drug missions in Central America.

It is home to Joint Task Force Bravo, which the U.S. Department of Defense has described as a temporary but indefinite presence.

Castro's political opposition, however, was quick to denounce the president's comments.

Jorge Clix, a likely Liberal Party candidate in Honduras' Nov. 30 presidential elections, said Castro put Honduras in grave danger for personal and ideological reasons.

Olban Valladares, a political analyst who plans to run for the Innovation and Unity Party, criticized Castro's threat.

She knows that we do not have the capacity to threaten the United States in any way and that the damage that would cause to Honduras would be terrible, Valladares said. He said the threat could make Honduran migrants an even bigger target for the Trump administration.
