Irish government holds emergency meeting to prepare for 'multi-hazard weather event'
The Irish government's emergency planning team is holding meetings as the country prepares for a multi-hazard weather event expected to hit the country late on Saturday, the PA news agency reported.
Snow, ice, heavy rain and sleet will sweep across the island of Ireland as temperatures continue to drop. A series of weather warnings are in place, including an orange snow and ice condition warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary. This warning will be in effect from 5pm on Saturday to 5pm on Sunday.
Separate rain and snow warnings have been issued for Cork, Kerry and Waterford. This warning goes into effect at 5pm on Saturday and will run for 24 hours. A yellow rain warning has been issued for these counties from 1 p.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, a yellow status warning for snow and ice has been issued for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Meath, Westmeath and Connacht.
Met ireann warned that the cold snap would make travel difficult and visibility poor.
Forecasters said Monday's accumulation of snow could lead to freezing temperatures continuing into next week, which could lead to school closures.
They warned it would lead to very difficult travel conditions, including disruptions to public transport, air, rail and bus services, difficult conditions underfoot and animal welfare issues.
A yellow ice and snow warning is in place across Northern Ireland from 9pm Saturday until 6pm Saturday.
The National Weather Service said rain, sleet and snow would fall until late Saturday, tapering off on Sunday. Rain is likely over coastal areas, but sleet and snow are more likely inland and at higher elevations.
Away from the coast, around 1cm to 3cm of snow could accumulate, while the Mournes, Sperrins and Antrim Hills could see up to 10cm of snow. Ice will pose an additional hazard, especially on untreated surfaces, forecasters added.
Taoiseach Simon Harris urged the public to proceed with caution as the country faces severe weather.
Harris said the emergency planning team would meet on Saturday but did not confirm whether schools and colleges would remain closed on Monday.

What Causes Freezing Rain?Daniel Lavelle
Here is a snippet:
What causes freezing rain?
Rain often starts as snow, hail, or sleet when the air is cold enough. As it falls, it can pass through the warm air and melt into rain droplets before leaving the umbrella.
Freezing rain occurs when water droplets pass through another layer of cold air before landing. The water droplets are supercooled. This means that even when the temperature drops below freezing, it still falls into liquid form.
When these supercooled water droplets hit the surface of the ground, which is also below freezing, they spread slightly before everything they touch is immediately glazed with ice.
