Winter storms are expected across Ireland and the UK on Sunday, while storms are expected in Norway on Monday.

Dramatic winter weather conditions are expected to intensify quickly from Sunday to Tuesday across Western Europe and into Scandinavia as a deep winter storm moves across Ireland and the UK. A significant snowstorm is expected on Sunday, with heavy accumulations of snow across Ireland and into northern England. A cyclone strengthened over the North Sea on Sunday night, bringing more snowstorms to southern Norway on Monday.

The new year brings dynamic and progressive weather patterns across the North Atlantic and Europe. Therefore, more winter storms are expected to hit the continent in the coming days.

We are tracking the first storm to explode into Ireland and the UK on Sunday and then move into Scandinavia on Monday.

Heavy snowfall is expected to follow a strengthening Atlantic storm as it moves across Ireland early Sunday morning. It will continue north-east across north-central England during the day.

The cyclone then strengthened further over the North Sea, bringing heavy snow to southern Norway and Sweden on Monday.

Earlier this Saturday, satellite images of water vapor across the Atlantic indicated a storm developing north of the Azores. The storm gradually organized into a widespread system as it accelerated toward western Europe.

The storm will pass northeastward over southern Ireland and central England on Sunday, reaching the North Sea on Monday and southern Scandinavia on Tuesday.

The attached video presents a brief overview of rapidly worsening winter storm conditions across Western and Northern Europe from Saturday to Tuesday.

Due to rapid temperature changes, there will be snow in the north of the front and heavy rain in the south. Strong warm advection causes heavy rain.

Heavy snow is expected to fall across southern Ireland, Wales and north-central England on Saturday night and continue on Sunday.

The winter storm will move into the North Sea by Monday.

A deep pressure trough appears across Western Europe on Sunday, bringing winter storms across Ireland and the UK.

General weather conditions across Europe on Sunday indicate deep upper-level waves emerging from the Atlantic into Western Europe and high pressure blocking over southern and eastern Europe. This will allow for a strong surface front to develop and form a significant winter storm across the UK.

The forces of high pressure further east of the continent will drag disturbances towards Scandinavia early next week.

This will cause significant upper-level disturbances and lead to powerful winter storms. Central pressure will continue to decrease as the system moves across the UK from the mid 980s on Saturday night to the low 960s over the North Sea on Monday.

The rapidly deepening low will pump massive amounts of moisture toward the surface frontal system from the southwest while also bringing in much colder air masses from the north. This will bring heavy rain, snow in the north and rain in the south.

The following 850 mbar (approximately 1250 m above sea level) temperature chart shows rapid temperature changes along a frontal region extending from southern Ireland through central England to the Netherlands on Sunday afternoon.

Strong, warm advection is visible south of the front, while cold air masses remain north of the system center. This can lead to heavy winter rainfall, with temporary freezing rain in addition to heavy snowfall.

The Atlantic storm will continue to intensify central pressure as it appears over Ireland and the UK on Saturday night. Heavy snow will fall north of the warm front. Heavy rain will fall in southern England as warm air mass advection strengthens.

The cyclone will move quickly northeast and into the North Sea, reaching southern Norway and Denmark by Monday morning. Heavy snow will spread in Norway and Sweden, and heavy rain will fall in Denmark and the southern coastal areas of Scandinavia.

Freezing rain may occur locally where cold pools are trapped.

Across Western Europe, the heaviest snow accumulation is expected to occur along the frontal border and just north of the storm's center. The latest model guidance agrees that the highest amounts will be in south-central Ireland, parts of Wales and north-central England.

The combination of sufficiently cold temperatures and significant air mass frontal forcing will result in heavy and wet snowfall. In some areas, between 10 and 30 cm of fresh snow could accumulate within 24 hours. Heavier snow is likely to fall in the highlands of Wales and northern England. Southern Scotland is also expected to see significant snowfall on Sunday.

Rainfall totals during the winter storm will be high across southern Ireland and central England. 70 to 120 mm will be possible locally until Tuesday morning.

This will continue to lead to worsening waterlogged land locally and may lead to further flooding in some areas.

The snow over Ireland and the UK will gradually fade from Sunday night into Monday morning as the system moves into the North Sea.

Wintry showers are expected to spread across the UK and Ireland on Monday as a cold maritime airmass will spread behind the low.

Another strong storm bringing heavy snow to Norway and Sweden on Monday

Deep waves over Western Europe will extend into Scandinavia early next week, thanks to a ridge blocking the skies over Eastern Europe. On Monday and Tuesday, the deep core will be parked over Norway and Sweden.

This will support further strengthening of the British winter storm as it tracks across the North Sea, with central pressures deepening rapidly to levels as low as 960 mbar by Monday night as the system reaches southern Norway.

Strong warm advection will bring heavy precipitation (mainly heavy snow) and gale to severe winds to the north.

Heavy snowfall will spread across south-central Norway and central Sweden by Monday morning, with extremes of Sweden and Denmark already transitioning from snow to rain due to a much warmer air mass arriving with lower temperatures.

North of the stagnant surface, heavy snowfall is expected to continue across much of southern Norway and central Sweden on Monday and throughout Monday night. A frontal band of snow is expected to spread across southern Finland on Monday night.

Most of Norway is already experiencing heavy snowfall this winter, but this system is expected to bring more snow.

The heaviest snow accumulation is expected across southern Norway and central Sweden. Locally, 40 to 80 cm of fresh snow is expected to accumulate over approximately 36 hours from Monday morning to Tuesday evening.

Avalanche risk increases significantly.

Snowfall will gradually taper off on Tuesday as heavy snow spreads across northeastern Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Dynamic weather, including wintry and snowy weather, is expected to continue over the coming weeks, with the gradual pattern across the North Atlantic and Europe expected to remain in place.
