Heavy snowfall has disrupted travel across the country with flights canceled and highways closed after two yellow weather warnings were issued.

Bristol Airport was forced to temporarily suspend flights for several hours on Saturday night as it rushed to clear snow from its runways, with dozens of flights affected.

The M5 is also closed in the other direction due to several collisions between Weston-super-Mare and Taunton in Somerset.

More freezing weather is expected to hit the UK over the weekend, with eight Met Office weather warnings issued between Saturday and Monday morning.

An amber warning for snow and rain has been issued for most of Wales and central England from 6pm on Saturday until noon on Sunday.

A secondary snow warning has been issued for most of northern England, including Leeds, Sheffield and the Lake District. It was issued from 9pm on Saturday to midnight on Sunday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said heavy snowfall of 3 to 7 centimeters is expected to fall in both warning areas, with snow possibly mixing with rain at times in low-lying areas.

Additional yellow weather warnings for snow and ice will come into force for most of England at various times over the weekend.

An amber warning for snow and ice has been issued from noon on Saturday until midnight on Sunday for most of England and Wales where an amber warning is not in place.

An amber warning warning that snow and ice would cover most of Northern Ireland was also in effect from 9pm on Saturday to 6pm on Sunday.

An amber warning for ice has been issued for northern Scotland from 4pm on Saturday until 10am on Sunday, while an amber warning for snow has been issued for the Shetland Islands from 10am to 6pm on Saturday.

A yellow warning for rain has also been issued for most of Wales and the West Midlands from 6am to 9pm on Sunday.

The Met Office's chief forecaster Jason Kelly said heavy snow accumulations were possible in parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England, with the added factor of strengthening winds which could cause the accumulated snow to drift away.

He added: “There is a risk of freezing rain across the Midlands and northern England, particularly Wales, increasing the risk of ice and creating some hazardous conditions.”

When supercooled raindrops hit a surface, they instantly freeze and cover everything with a layer of ice, making them extremely dangerous.

Meanwhile, National Highways warned that damaging snow would spread to southern and central parts of the road network on Saturday night.

Drivers in high altitude areas, particularly the Cotswolds and Peak District, have been warned to take extra care. Gwent Police issued a warning of black ice on Friday.

Road users in northern England have been warned that up to 25cm of snow could fall on parts of the network including the A66 Old Spittal, A628 Woodhead Pass and the M62 at Windy Hill.

Meanwhile, Bristol Airport suspended up to 17 flights as of 9:30pm on Saturday due to heavy snow.
