Heavy snow moved north overnight, affecting large parts of England and Wales. Accumulating snow in southern England and southern Wales has now turned back to rain as warmer air moves in from the south, but heavy snow continues in the north.

Areas of heavy snowfall early on Sunday morning include north Wales and the North Midlands and extend across northern England. Many cities, including Leeds and York, are currently seeing around 5cm of snow.

The largest waterfalls are in the Highlands, particularly the Pennines and Cumbrian Fells, where up to 40cm of snow could fall by the end of today. There is also snow affecting southern Scotland, particularly the southern Uplands.

Ice is also dangerous this morning. Particularly in Wales and central England, rain falls on sub-zero surfaces and freezes on contact.

It was a bitterly cold night in northern England. The coldest place last night was Lake Glascarnock in Scotland, where temperatures dropped to -11 degrees Celsius. This is in contrast to southern England, where temperatures are very mild at 12C.
