Heavy snowfall is wreaking havoc across the UK this morning and overnight as a cold wave continues to sweep the country for the first weekend of 2025, with yellow weather warnings remaining in place and new warnings issued.

Several major airports temporarily closed their runways due to heavy snowfall, leading to canceled and delayed flights. Leeds Bradford Airport remains closed, but Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon Airports have now reopened.

The National Highways has warned that up to 25cm of snow and ice could affect roads in northern England, with some major roads potentially closed.

An amber warning for snow and rare rain covering most of Wales and central England was lifted at midday, but another yellow snow warning was in place for most of northern England until the end of the day.

The Meteorological Administration said up to 40cm of snow is expected to fall in the worst-hit areas, while 3cm to 7cm is expected to fall in most warning areas.

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning has been issued for most of England.

Forecasters have issued a new yellow rain warning across southern England on Sunday, which will last until 9am on Monday and could bring a risk of flooding as temperatures warm.

The UK Health Security Agency is issuing a cold weather health warning across the UK ahead of a week of cold temperatures.

Plumpton was flooded and closed after morning rain

Despite passing initial morning inspections, the BetGoodwin Sussex national meeting at Plumpton was canceled on Sunday due to worsening conditions.

Officials announced precautionary checks at 8.30am ahead of one of the most high-profile track fixtures of the season as heavy rain was forecast overnight.

The race was initially sanctioned while 25mm of rain fell. However, less than two hours later, the meeting was canceled due to waterlogging issues.

Marcus Waters, Course Manager, said: Five millimeters of rain was expected to fall between 8.30am and noon, which we thought was manageable, but just before 10am it had already reached 7.5mm.

That much rain in a short period of time had left us with a few bad patches of land and we no longer thought it was safe.

Very disappointed. At 8:30am we felt we had a good chance given what the weather forecast was, but there was more rain than expected and that pushed us to our limits.

It was always a difficult decision, and it would have been the same no matter what kind of meeting we had. We have our own processes and it was really unfortunate that it happened on such an important day.

Comment: My elderly mother cannot afford the heating bills and needs fuel for the winter.

Even the most independent pensioners find the current situation difficult.

My 73-year-old mother is no stranger to difficult times. She is a widow after losing her father to a difficult battle with cancer, and suffers from rheumatoid arthritis herself. She's strong and stubborn, so I was shocked when she recently told me how worried she was about heating her house this winter and about her health during this cold spell.

Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
