The Met Office has issued 10 weather warnings for the first weekend of 2025, with temperatures plunging and snow and ice looming over the UK.
Two yellow weather warnings were in place for most of the Midlands, Wales and parts of northern England, including warnings of snow and ice, which were lifted at midday on Sunday. A second yellow snow warning will remain in place for parts of northern England and the Midlands until the end of Sunday.
Met Office forecaster Jason Kelly said significant snow accumulation was expected over the weekend, with up to 40cm of snow expected in areas most affected by the yellow warning. It is expected to be about 3 to 7 cm wider.
The Met Office warned that power outages, rail delays and cancellations, and road problems were all things people in affected areas could expect.
Mr Kelly also said there was a risk of hazardous conditions due to ice, with freezing rain, ice and heavy rain posing a range of weather hazards to the UK.
As a result, a yellow snow and ice warning has been introduced for most of England at midday on Saturday, including areas under amber warning, which could lead to power outages and travel delays across much of the UK. The warning will last until the end of Sunday.
A yellow snow and ice warning will then come into effect for parts of northern England and northern Wales from midnight on Sunday and will last until midday on Monday.
Another yellow warning for snow and ice came into effect across Northern Ireland from 9pm on Saturday and will last until 6pm on Sunday, with travel disruption and injuries from ice slips expected.
A yellow freeze warning will then be in place for most of Northern Ireland from midnight Sunday until 11am Monday.

Weather warning issued by the Met Office on Monday
We have issued a number of severe weather warnings for parts of England and Wales, including an amber warning for snow and ice.
Significant amounts of snow could accumulate, particularly in parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England, with fairly widespread accumulations of more than 5cm possible, with up to 20-30cm, and potentially 30-30cm, possible in the highlands of central and north Wales. 40cm in the Pennines section.
This, along with strengthened winds, may cause accumulated snow to drift away.
Snow and ice can cause traffic problems, and on state highways drivers are warned to slow down and keep their distance from other vehicles.

Darren Clark, National Highway Severe Weather Resiliency Manager: If you are planning to travel this weekend, please keep your distance and slow down. Gritters will maintain roads around the clock when ice or snow is forecast, but it's still important to drive accordingly.
Even in situations that seem normal and the snow is not settling, you can always experience slippery conditions.
Drivers must plan their trips, inspect their vehicles, monitor weather forecasts and pack snow kits consisting of blankets, food, water and shovels.
The UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) has issued a cold yellow alert (CHA) ahead of a week in which temperatures will plummet. It starts at noon on Thursday and lasts until Wednesday.
There is an increased risk to the health of other vulnerable populations, including older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and heavy sleepers.
