Imagine for a moment that in just a few years, Prime Minister Nigel Farage will arrive at 10 Downing Street, set his briefcase down on his desk and take his seat. UK Reform Chair Zia Yusuf says: An audience of enthusiastic partygoers. Change is coming. We will change this country and return Britain to its rightful place as one of the greatest countries in the world.

The speech received rapturous applause and a standing ovation at the East of England Reform Conference in the rural North West Essex constituency of Kemi Badenoch last Saturday.

Around 1,000 people packed into the seasonally named summer marquee at Chelmsford City Racecourse for the event. The event is one of four party gatherings taking place across the UK over the course of a fortnight.

The mood was jubilant as a series of speakers delivered what they saw as a political victory in the ongoing dispute over Reform's brisk poll ratings and membership figures with Conservative leader Badenoch.

The word of the day is momentum. Reform has all the momentum in British politics, but make no mistake about it. We still have enormous work to do, Yusuf told the crowd, before appealing to members to volunteer as candidates and pollsters in local elections.

The reforms no longer simply aim to disrupt British politics. It's organizing. Factions are emerging across the country, and an electoral system is being built slowly but surely. Lee Anderson, one of the five Reform MPs, used his speech as a call to action after he arrived on stage as Let's Go Football chants blared from the speaker system.

We have a mountain to climb, but we have all the momentum,” he told members. There are local elections this year and Scottish and Welsh elections next year. We must fight at every ballot box in our great country.

The audience is clearly ready for a fight, but not everyone shares the leadership's optimism. Nick, 67, believes British voters are looking for something different, adding: The election system may fail us, but I believe we have the will.

Wearing a Union Jack t-shirt, Reform MP Mark, 61, was a member of Reform's previous incarnation, the Brexit party, and is well aware of the struggle to translate support into electoral seats. He says: We have momentum now, but there is no doubt that if we become a bigger threat, the sword will come out politically and in the mainstream media.

Other Reform members worry that the party's current membership is too narrow to compete with the broader constituencies of the major parties. The majority of attendees are men over 50 and almost all are white.

Maria, 65, acknowledges that the population here is very mature. She fears reform supporters of her generation will either return to the main political parties or vote tactically in the next general election.

They are sheep and not independent thinkers, she adds. Now is the time for change. But we need to attract a much more diverse group of people.

Asked if she could consider Farage as the next prime minister, Maria said the party was not ready to take power now but it could be in 2029, adding: If there was an election tomorrow there would be too much. [sheep people] But I think in a few years we'll be much more ready for reform, and if the money comes in from places like Elon. [Musk] It will help a lot.

Rumors that the tech billionaire may be investing serious money are a frequent topic of conference conversation, even though Farage publicly rejected Elon Musk's vocal support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson on Friday. Anderson himself emphasizes that the supporters of reform are true British patriots but not extreme right-wingers, but Robinson himself is not mentioned in any of the speeches.

Standing in the marquee bar, Mark said Robinson was not someone we wanted associated with the party, adding: Why can't there be differences of opinion with Musk?

Nick said Farage and Musk should agree to disagree, adding: But it seems unusual that both Trump and Musk are so interested in British politics.

Some reform speakers hail Trump's election victory as an example of what the British party can achieve, while others praise Musk as a hero and visionary. But most of the focus is closer to home. Key topics included immigration, small boats, crime, the economy, and opposition to green energy policies.

Yusuf announced that Reform would launch an independent investigation into grooming gangs if he were to come to power, and Farage later called for a full and public national inquiry so everyone in the country would know the truth.

Badenoch called for a national investigation Friday after Musk made a series of posts about the issue on X. He criticized Keir Starmer for failing to prosecute grooming gangs and called for Protection Secretary Jess Phillips to be jailed.

In fact, there was an independent investigation into the Rotherham scandal in Telford with the Jay Report in 2014, which concluded in 2022. As Director of Public Prosecutions in 2013, Starmer launched legal action against Rochdale gangs and set out to reform prosecutors.

Farage linked sexual exploitation to mass open immigration of unassimilated people, calling it a disaster and drawing widespread applause.
