What scandal was there?

In X, Musk claimed that hundreds of thousands of British girls had been targeted by gang rapes and murders.

It is unclear what Musk is basing his claims on. The 2014 Jay report into abuse in the South Yorkshire village of Rotherham, led by Professor Alexis Jay, conservatively estimated that 1,400 children were targeted between 1997 and 2013. Some of them were as young as 11 years old. A similar story was repeated in the village. And cities across the country.

Although the first prosecutions for street grooming began in 2010, the number of known victims is in the thousands.

Was there an official cover-up?

Starmer ran the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013, when the scandal first broke.

Musk wrote in X this week that Starmer should leave and be charged with complicity in the worst mass crime in British history.

Claims that Starmer bears some responsibility for failing to bring grooming gangs to justice stem in particular from an incident in Rochdale in 2009 where he decided not to prosecute the alleged perpetrators. The lawyers believed that the victim would not be seen as trustworthy or trustworthy.

Since the first case against a street grooming gang went to trial 15 years ago, a number of independent local investigations have been conducted into how they were able to operate right under the noses of authorities, including in Rochdale, Manchester, Rotherham and Telford.

It emerged last week that Jess Phillips, England's minister for protection and violence against women and girls, had rejected a request for Oldham City Council to conduct a national inquiry into grooming gangs in the town. She said the council should instead commission a local inquiry, as happened in Rotherham and Telford.

A national independent inquiry into child sexual abuse launched in 2015 and included an in-depth look into how local authorities responded to such criminal networks.

None of the recommendations have yet been implemented.

Health Minister Wes Streeting said on Sunday the government was not holding a national inquiry because it had already done so, adding that victims were entitled to full implementation of the recommendations today, tomorrow and next week.
