Prime Minister's remarks on the NHS: 6 January 2025

Prime Minister's remarks on the NHS: 6 January 2025

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you had a refreshing Christmas holiday.

I recognize and realize that for so many people in the NHS, the words Christmas and relaxation often do not go together well.

So before I say anything else, I want to say this to all of you, and through you to all my colleagues working in the NHS. thank you

Thank you for your service to our country. And for the countless lives you save and change every day. Thank you so much.

Now, of course, this year marks the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ day.

And on May 8 and August 15, we will come together to celebrate this nation's greatest victory and the greatest generation that achieved it.

It will be a great moment and we intend to make them proud.

But that generation knew that the strength and prosperity of a nation depended on the safety of its workers.

And the basic mission of government is to provide security so that workers can realize their aspirations and develop their country.

So for this government, it's about what this year is, what next year is, what every waking moment is.

This is the goal of the plan for change. And this year we will deliver.

And I would like to say that there is currently no institution more important to our country's security than the National Health Insurance, which was established by that generation 80 years ago.

It embodies British values and humanity.

Fairness and equal respect.

But look now. And I'm looking at the employee here.

Because of a record feeling of dissatisfaction.

There are millions of people waiting, waiting, waiting on waiting lists.

Their lives were put on hold.

The country's potential if you like blocking it.

So 2025 is the year we rebuild Britain.

And rebuilding the NHS is the cornerstone of that.

We will uphold the principles we all hold dear and that you all live by every day.

Management – Free at point of use.

Treat as needed. Key principles.

But it's about advancing the service into the future.

We need to reform the NHS from top to bottom.

With the plans launching today, millions of additional pledges have been signed, sealed and delivered.

National renewal is underway.

People have been saying for a long time that we can't do this.

There is a sense of fatalism about the potential of this country.

The difference we can make to the people we work with.

Well, this plan is a comprehensive rebuttal to that way of thinking.

National Health Service that treats patients more quickly. That's closer to their life.

It provides a level of convenience we take for granted with almost every service we use every day.

Imagine that every day, millions of people buy food or clothes for their families with just a few taps on their phones. They book holidays. They even find love!

There is no good reason why the NHS cannot provide this kind of convenience to the public, free at the point of use.

In fact, it should be so.

And we talked about some of these this morning. We need an NHS hungry for innovation, as you are at this

That's the only way to face the challenges of the future.

The wonder of how we live longer and longer.

And with that hunger, we will save countless lives.

Incredibly improve your current practice.

Don't doubt that this is possible.

Systems like ours, with massive amounts of patient data, scale and the extraordinary resilience of NHS staff.

We are well-positioned for the AI revolution in healthcare.

Trust me – it’s coming.

And Britain is the world leader.

So we can do this.

But first we must face the reality of what is needed.

Because the NHS cannot be a national funding pit.

Productivity cannot be 11% lower than before the pandemic.

Working people cannot be expected to subsidize current levels of care with ever-increasing taxes.

That is the price of avoiding reform and I will not support it.

I believe in public services and the NHS and I will fight day and night for them. But I would never support it.

And as many of you know, as we talked about this morning, my wife, my sister, and my mother.

They all work or have worked in the NHS. And you know and I know that no one in the NHS works for a comfortable life.

Indeed, I have said many times before that I would not be standing before you today if it were not for the NHS.

My mom had Still's disease and was diagnosed when she was 11 years old. And one of the things she was told was that she would never have children.

The NHS never gave up on her. That's why I'm standing here today. Thank you NHS. Because every family has a story to thank the NHS for.

And every day, in this hospital and throughout the service, NHS staff do their best to save lives and care for the families of others.

Then wake up the next day and do it all again. everyday.

So if you think about what they've been through for over 14 years.

It makes me angry.

You're angry that you're working harder and harder and yet the system isn't delivering the results your patients or staff need.

This is a blunt and dry argument for reform.

And it's not just about money.

In the Budget we have invested more than $25 billion in the National Health Service.

It's a record amount, with over 1.8 billion since July in waiting time reductions alone.

This is an investment that will deliver 40,000 additional appointments each week and build some of the technology we use here.

And that is the result everyone hopes for. This is what everyone hopes for. But it was only possible because of the difficult choices we faced.

But I want to make it clear that money will not be used as it has been in the past merely to cover up cracks.

This is the very definition of stubborn plaster politics we were elected to change.

No, this is the year we roll up our sleeves and reform the NHS.

A new era of medical convenience. Get faster treatment at your fingertips. The patient is under control. An NHS fit for the future.

It’s not just about giving patients greater flexibility around appointments or leveraging the features of the NHS app.

And we are working to make that happen.

But there is a bigger principle here.

Organizing services around patient control unlocks huge untapped potential.

And we can see this through the really important Marthas Rule.

It's about shifting the balance of power away from passive deference to doctors and toward patients being able to get second opinions.

Play a greater role in determining their care and treatment.

And the initial results of Marthas Rule are in.

The lives of the sickest patients we treat:

Converted, expanded, saved.

Therefore, this is a rule that is now recognized as a potentially groundbreaking innovation.

So take a look. Across the NHS we will give patients control over their own care.

And to meet those needs, we will bring health care closer to their lives.

Seek treatment at a hospital or center.

And provide more care through GPs, the community and at home.

And as we look at the work you do right here this morning, you've given us some great examples of how shifting attention to people's communities and their homes makes a difference.

Because, as you know, this will make a huge difference in latency.

If only more GPs had immediate access to a specialist. An earlier diagnosis could avoid an additional 800,000 unnecessary referrals and appointments each year.

Another game changer community diagnostic center.

We will be opening more of them and they will be open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

So if you need a scan or x-ray, it can be done much faster and more conveniently.

This alone would provide an additional 440,000 tests and scans each year.

Also, encourage patients with long-term conditions to self-monitor at home. Give them the skills to do so.

This will result in another 500,000 fewer unnecessary appointments.

We also reform funding incentives.

Focus your investments on things that can actually reduce wait times.

Too much money is wasted due to ineffective care. That has to stop. Because we can't afford it.

Artificial intelligence will help us here too.

I actually saw it at the hospital late last year.

It's an AI-enhanced stethoscope that can literally tell you from your heartbeat whether you're at risk of a heart attack.

And think about it.

The patient was saved in an instant.

In the possible futures they could have had, where they fall apart, perhaps more than once.

I was rushed by trolley to the hospital's acute care clinic. All of this was prevented because AI could have caught this much earlier.

Think about the impact on the individual patient, the people that could happen, and of course their families, but also the NHS.

Artificial intelligence is a technology with almost unlimited capabilities to reduce waste, speed up work, and save lives. And this plan will ensure that the NHS puts it to good use.

And finally, if we want to reduce latency as dramatically as possible, our approach must be undogmatic.

Working people would expect nothing less.

So today I welcome a new agreement that will expand the relationship between the NHS and the private health sector.

Make it easier for the NHS to access space, facilities and resources in private hospitals.

The NHS can have more beds, more surgeries and more care. Patient Care – Free at point of use. Target – Where we need it most.

Partnership – in the national interest. We work for you by reducing your wait time. Communicate your plan for change.

I know some people won't like this, but I don't intend to apologize.

Change is urgent.

I am not interested in putting ideology ahead of patients, nor am I interested in moving at the pace of excuses.

Throughout this project we've been involved in, people have been telling us to slow down.

You can't win in every country in the UK.

you won't follow through with the plan

They'll say that again this year. I have no doubt about it.

It is a hymn to decline.

But they have been wrong every step of the way and will continue to be wrong.

Because this year we will show that Britain can do it. We can change our country.

Politics can be a force for good.

We can unite the NHS for a reform plan.

A faster, easier and more convenient NHS with reduced waiting times.

Patient in control.

Technology for you.

and outstanding care for your community.

This is the change we will deliver.

Another step on the road to country and people

Strong, safe and confident.

The future will be better for their children.

thank you
