Britain's Starmer accuses grooming gangs of spreading 'lies'

LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded Monday to a barrage of attacks on Elon Musk's government, denouncing lies and misinformation he said were undermining British democracy.

The billionaire Tesla CEO has taken an intense and volatile interest in British politics since his centre-left Labor party was elected last July. Musk used his social network X to call for new elections and call for Starmer's imprisonment. On Monday, he posted an online poll among his 210 million followers about the following suggestions: America must free the British people from their tyrannical government.

Asked about Musk's comments, Starmer criticized those who spread lies and misinformation as widely as possible, particularly politicians from Britain's opposition Conservative Party who have echoed some of Musk's claims.

Recently, Musk has focused on child sexual abuse, particularly a series of incidents that have rocked the northern British city where a group of men, mainly from Pakistan, are accused of grooming and abusing dozens of girls. The incident has been used by far-right activists to link child abuse to immigration and attack politicians who are said to have covered up grooming gangs for fear of being seen as racist.

Musk posted a call for a public investigation into the incident. Although the inquiry was conducted under the previous Conservative government, many of the recommendations it made for 2022 have not yet been implemented.

Musk also criticized Starmer for failing to punish perpetrators when he served as Britain's director of public prosecutions from 2008 to 2013.

Answering questions after a speech near London, Starmer defended his record as chief prosecutor, saying he had reopened closed cases and changed the entire prosecution approach to child sexual exploitation.

He also criticized the language Musk used about Jess Phillips, the government minister responsible for combating violence against women and girls. Musk called Phillips an advocate of rape and genocide and said she deserved to be in prison.

A line has been crossed in my book when the venom of the far right leads to a serious threat to Jess Phillips and others, Starmer said. I love the strong momentum of politics, the strong debate we need to have. But it must be based on facts and truth, not lies.

Starmer largely avoided mentioning Musk by name in his response, perhaps wary of giving him more of a spotlight. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, another target of X owners' ire, took a similar approach. Scholz said he remains cool-headed about Musk's critical personal comments, but is concerned that the American billionaire is trying to participate in the general election by supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Starmer said the main problem was not Musk's post about X, but what politicians here were doing to defend our democracy.

He said he was concerned that conservative politicians in Britain were amplifying far-right rhetoric and desperately needed attention.
