looking ahead
As the low pressure area that brought snow and rain this morning clears to the east, the weather will be quieter tonight.
Temperatures will drop well below freezing and there will be widespread frost with the risk of ice forming almost everywhere.
Additional wintry showers will occur in the evening and overnight, driven by northwest winds.
Winter showers are expected in northern and western Scotland, with 5 to 10 cm of rain accumulating over 200 metres.
There will be some scattered wintry showers in the same area tomorrow, but for the most part the weather will be very cold and dry with some sunshine.
A separate snow forecast was issued across southern English counties on Wednesday, warning that up to 2 to 5 cm of snow could fall between 9am and midnight.
How is a warming climate changing winter?
The world has become more than 1 degree warmer than before industrialization. As a result, winters in the UK are changing.
While the climate continues to warm overall, we may still see short-term extremes of hot and cold weather, but extreme extremes are likely to become fewer and fewer in between.
Climate change will bring more rain. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, so the UK winter is expected to see more rainfall and a higher risk of flooding.
