Northern Ireland's Health Minister said the number of flu hospital admissions had increased 3.6 times compared to last year.
Stormonts Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said the number of people admitted to hospital with flu in Northern Ireland this winter was 3.6 times higher than the previous year.
Mr Nesbitt told the health board that patients forced to wait for long periods in hospital emergency departments often had to give up their dignity and privacy and staff were suffering a moral toll.
The minister announced that he would expand the flu vaccination program to all citizens over the age of 50.
Health department officials added that while this has been the highest year for flu cases since before the pandemic, they believe hospital admissions have also peaked.
Mr Nesbitt attended an emergency meeting of the oversight committee amid ongoing concerns about winter pressures on Northern Ireland's health service, particularly waiting times in hospital emergency departments.
Mr Nesbitt began his evidence by paying tribute to health and social care staff who worked over Christmas.
The minister said he was looking at short-term means to deal with pressure on hospitals and provide a blank slate for next winter.

A woman visits her mother in Loughborough who is trapped in her home due to flooding.
A 25-year-old woman who was visiting her mother's home in Belton Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, for Christmas said she did not expect to become trapped after her home flooded on Tuesday.
Dua Abdullal is trapped upstairs with his mother and sister, while the ground floor of the house is filled with water.
She said their home was destroyed by flooding from Storm Henk in January last year and the family has not been able to complete repairs since then.
Ms Abdulal said: We were trapped upstairs. Last year my family moved out of the building.
Luckily we were able to get everything upstairs when the flood warning was issued today.
We're still recovering from last year, and in fact we haven't renovated our house yet, so it's really stressful.

A man whose home was damaged by Storm Henk last year has had his house flooded again.
A man, who did not wish to be named, found his home in Belton Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, submerged on Tuesday as water levels in the nearby Grand Union Canal rose.
He said he had been living in alternative accommodation for a year after Storm Henk damaged his home in January and was just due to move back in before the flooding started again on Monday.
The homeowner told the PA news agency while standing on the roadside near his house. They were almost ready for their new downstairs unit. Now all the new stuff, new items have to be repaired and replaced again.
They would potentially tell us that everything should be scrapped.
Last year everything downstairs was damaged – carpets, floors, furniture.
It's hard to believe that something like this happened again just one year later.
I don't understand all this. I never think something like that would happen in this area.
It's the Grand Union Canal, and it seems to have a weak point where some sort of overflow occurs and everything cascades down this way.
